I've conducted a little experiment this morning regarding bedding and preferences.

All my pigs cages were separated into 3 parts:

1/3 fleece - 1/3 wood shavings - 1/3 hay

once this was done i left them to pig out (no pun intended) on the hay and veggies.

Once they had done, it was time to snooze!

This is where they all chose to nap.

Humphrey - Hay
Squeaky - Wood shavings
Bruce - Wood shavings
Rodger - Fleece
Jessie - wood shavings

I would have thought the hay or fleece would have been top preference but the horrid wood shavings seems to be the top to snooze in!

At least now i know who to provide with what lol

Ha Ha, i am suprised it didn't all end up as one with hay and shavings being dragged onto the fleece, i bet this is what mine would have done LOL.

LOLOLOL! I don't think it will be long until they decide hay and shavings are much better on top of the fleece lol

I might do a veggie & toy experiment tomorrow - see if they prefer home grown veggies or shop bought, and see if they prefer expensive toys or incredibly cheap ones!

Mine ignore all shop bought toys, they just head butt them out the way, but as soon as there is a loo or kitchen roll tube or a brown paper bag or an empty box put in there, they're fighting for it and its soon gone!

Alot of people have mentioned this.

I do wonder what kind of shop bought toys they would play with? they certainly seem to prefer chewing paper and cardboard instead of wood :{

I might have a look online and see if i can find anything to tempt them with

Mine are the same, and with treats, i dread to think how much money we have spent on toys and treats that they haven't touched!

My girls have a C&C with a hay section and a fleece section Sherbert seems to prefer sleeping on fleece while Sookie and Rio like sleeping on the fleece under the ramp. And they only very rarely sleep in the cuddly bed i spent a tenner on {:| I've seen Sookie lift it up and sleep under it but not actually go in it recently.
As for toys I bought them a ball of woven willow sticks that went completely ignored til i stuck bits of food between the gaps in the twigs. :)) they also love toilet roll chubes filled with hay more than anything i've bought them from a shop and i'm going to try them with carpet rolls now they've worn out their shop bought chube and see if they like it and use it as much as the chube.

I find that my piggies prefer a variety of sleeping places, so I offer that to them.

I think pigs are like kids in that they always prefer the cardboard rather than the toys hmmmm. Mine adore boxes and tubes and have never bothered with any shop bought piggy toys.

Thanks for the report of the experiment, really. In my travels this week one of the things I scrutinized was the fact there are different types of bedding for small animals. There are great bales of wood shavings around; some cedar, some pine, some that say "softwood", some that say "aspenwood", and one interesting blend of "aspenwood and paper pellets." That last looked really interesting but I could not imagine a guinea pig caring to lie on wood chips. Obviously they will and some might prefer it. So I have but one question: What species of wood chips/shavings did you use?
