I read about Ivomec/Ivermectin (same thing presumably) all the time on this forum but cant find any suggestion as to where to buy it.

I want some oral ivomec wormer. I'm guessing a watered down horse wormer will do but dont want to risk it.

Where do people buy their oral ivomec?

Thankyou please. ;)

I honestly think people here get it from their vet, it is the safest way otherwise how do you know you are giving the correct dose?

You can't buy oral ivomec. It's actually a cattle dewormer that is diluted alot for use on guineas which isn't something I would want to do being unqualified in that area as an overdose could easily kill them. You can buy spot on that I've used in the past that works well. It's called Beaphar parasite spot on. I know pets at home stock it. It does get quite messy because it's quite dilute and if your pig weighs over 1000g then two pipettes of the stuff is not a large enough dose. Also the instructions on the back are only for preventative treatment, to get rid of mites you have to treat the pig at least twice 7-10 days apart.
Hope this helps, you may be better off asking your vet if he could suggest anything easier and less costly for you thogh he may say there is no other way.

Phone the Cambridge Cavy Trust for further advice if you wish to worm your guinea. There is no need to water anything down if you get the correct one, but there are lots of products out there- some that contain too little Ivermectin and some too much. Vedra will advise you more. There are also herbal wormers that you can consider that aren't stuffed with chemicals, the only drawback being that they don't kill the mange mite (which is when you should use Ivermectin/Ivermectin product.

what are the herbal wormers and where do you get them from? :)

I must have a look at those. How does one tell if their piggie has worms? :-\

Hi Mary,

I don't sell wormers, herbal or otherwise at Gorgeous Guineas.

Sunday's edition of "Piggy Tips" will be about Worming including details of two natural wormers. To receive a copy of this article, all you need to do is to sign up to the Mailing List and it will be sent to you automatically: http://www.gorgeousguineas.com/mailinglist.html

I've never used Spot On, only read about it. I know that some vets curse it because its below the ideal strength needed (Pet shops etc are not allowed to sell full strenngth). The one the vets use is stronger (spot on). If the problem with mites doesn't clear up (remember to bath as well, does Spot On tell you this?) then see your vet ASAP before the problem gets out of hand :) Glad you chose not to go down the road of diluting anything ;)

If its the Beaphar one from P@H it works well, I've used on all my 4 and it sorted them all out! I think the Bob Martin one is weaker.

To get the right strength its best to go to your vet, it will give you piece of mind too that youve done it right.

I do get mine from a cattle supplier BUT they can only sell it for cattle not guineas so you have to know what to say about your cattle to get it... I also wear my boiler suit covered in mud etc otherwise they dont believe me!

Vedra at the CCT is also another good place to get it.. but seek advice dont try watering down horsey stuff its unlikely that it will be right

Yeah thats the stuff. The Bob Martin one says to put about 40 drops on so I gave that a miss lol.

Will do, they seem happier already :smitten:

PS - I have GG neem shampoo standing by but which day should I bath them on?

Day 3 or 48 hours after applying Spot On, I would imagine, thats the recommended time for the oral Ivomec anyways.

Ditto to this, the Beaphar one is an underdose for larger piggies. The Bob Martin spot-on is also dangerous as it contains ingredients been found to kill and cause seizures in other rodents as well as skin problems in guinea pigs.
