I've just successfully got rid of lice on my piggies and was wondering if it is worth doing them with ivermectin on a regular basis - would it cause any problems / resistance?

It's personal choice. I only treat my pigs if they show symptoms but others treat routinely :)

I routinely ivomec here, both new piggies coming in / out of rescue, and my own pigs. They do not appear to build up a resistance to it.

However, I don't believe ivomec works on lice - other parasites (mites etc), yes. For static / running lice, you will still need to treat even if you do ivomec routinely.

I treat routinely too, I use both Ivomec and Panacur:

I don't see how the mites can build up a resistance, if the Ivomec kills off all live mites then the next mites that infest the pig haven't been touched by the Ivomec before...? Maybe I'm missing something here but I don't see the logic in it.

I treat routinely as well every 3 months. I haven't heard of this causing any problems or resitance. It really helps to prevent outbreaks and also treats guineas who may not overtly show signs of parasites but still may be carrying them.

I read it on this very forum and on the guinea lynx website that for the lice I had it would work. I guess it has done as there is none to be seen now and Tara's fur is growing back too.

Ivermectin doesn't specifically target lice, but I am aware that it has been effective in some cases - it needs more looking into. Ivermectin primarily targets parasites that feed off the blood. Lice feed off skin/hair debris.

No other treatment should wholly replace bathing, however. Irritation from dead parasites - lice or mites - can be a problem, so at least one bath after the full course of treatment has finished is still important.
