Jabba was put to sleep today

Some of you may have recently remembered the problems Jabba was having where he was wonky down his left side, since the last trip to the vets he was OK but in the last week or so he had severely deteriorated to the point where he was unable to move either of his back legs and generally was looking sluggish and not very happy.

We made a joint decision to have him put to sleep today which leaves just his brother Chewie.

Do you think Chewie will be ok on his own (they are 4yrs old)?
Chewie is quite dominant - should we get another pig to keep him company?

I'm so sorry for your loss. :( Maybe you could try boar-dating to find a friend for chewie? I'm sure if you provide us with your location someone will be able to tell you of a rescue near you that provides this service.
 
So sorry about Jabba :-( I think your piggie would love to have another friend. Perhaps you could take him boar dating. I know there are some experienced members on here that could advise you on that. Am sure there's probably a thread about it on here somewhere.
 
We are burring Jabba in a nice big pot, my wife has just gone out to get some nice flowers to plant on top of him :) As we are renting his memory will live on wherever we take that pot with us.

I was picking grass as a nice gesture of bedding for him in the pot and Chewie his brother wheeked for the first time - has not done this before.
 
What a lovely idea to bury him in a pot! As you said, that way you can take him with you if you ever move house! Hehe! Did you look at the map of rescues? Is there one near you that you could book chewie in for boar dating with?
 
I saw a couple near-by however they do not say on their sites that they do boar-dating.

I have emailed them anyhow to find out.

Ok great! If the rescues don't provide boar dating services then you could always adopt a baby boar to bond with chewie. Although this is not always successful.
 
Hi! I am so very sorry about Jabba. It is hard to let a piggy go.

Windwhistle Warren near Cheltenham offer boar dating; that is not all that far from you and well within a comfortable piggy travelling distance. They are also on our list of recommended rescues and I have heard only good things about them.

Dating is by far the best way of achieving a stable bond with a character compatible boar and it is worth anytime for that to travel that little bit further! The bonding happens at the rescue under expert supervision; that way, boars of any age can be rebonded with adult boars as well as youngsters.
 
I gather this would be a better idea than going to somewhere like pets@home and picking up a younger pig from there?

Yes definatly! Because:
A- At Boar dating the pigs are monitered by experienced people who know the usual dominance signs and know when a pig is starting to bully the other pig therefore your pig will come home with a friend you know he will get along with!
B- People on this forum strongly recommend not buying animals from pet shops because there is so many animals at rescues needing homes.

I think my other half wants Chewie to stay on his own as she is afraid that if he gets a mate and even if they date and get on well together, they may start to fight and the worse case scenario would be that the new piggie would kill chewie or just bully him.

He has been a bit quiet since yesterday, not seen him yet today - made sure he had enough hay/straw last night.

MIL said we should put a mirror inside the hutch on the wall so that it gives him some comfort..

He would be best off having a soft toy with nothing chewable (they love to nibble on eyes or tabs!) and if he can be boar dated they'll make sure that it is a totally suitable friend, they will also keep in touch and if you have any queries they'll be quick to respond :)
