Jack had his cyst removed last Wednesday January 21st. The vet wasn’t completely sure if it was a cyst or benign tumor. He drained it, cleaned it, and cut as much of the “necrosis” out as he could. He was put under general anesthesia for a max of 15 minutes according to the vet. He assured me “everything should go as expected,” and luckily it did. He said Jack handled the anesthesia well.
After being prescribed painkillers (Metacam) and antibiotics (2 doses a day of Baytril) he was all puffed up the first night and sleepy and still ate, but not a lot. A few days went by and he was sleepy a lot, hardly coming out of his house, munching a bit of hay and lettuce, and then hardly ate. I called the vet and he said to start Jack on critical care. I’ve been syringe feeding him since last Friday night. We took him to the vet on Wednesday (January 28th) a week after the cyst removal and the vet said Jack’s wound was healing well and everything looked good and to update him on Jack’s weight in another week and told me to keep an eye on him.
He stopped his antibiotics on Friday night (January 30th) and I’m still syringe feeding him. He’s been munching hay here and there and finally drinking quite a bit of water today and comes out of his house when I call. This is almost 48 hours off antibiotics and he’s slowly starting to act like himself again. His appetite is still not like it used to be. Could the antibiotics be what’s causing his lack of appetite? Also his poops are a little smaller than usual, but he is pooping quite a bit and the colour is normal.

Yes antibiotics can cause a lack of appetite, as they can kill off the good gut bacteria.
We recommend they are given probiotic while they are on antibiotics, and for a few days after the antibiotics stop, to try to help settle the gut.

It can also be that the painkillers weren’t enough and that was causing a reduction in appetite.
Obviously we don’t know what dosage he is in so you would need to discuss that with the vet.

Make sure to weigh him every morning and feed as much critical care as necessary (usually at least 60ml) to keep his weight stable. Once he starts eating enough hay, the critical care amount can be reduced and he can hopefully then maintain his weight by himself

I hope he feels better soon

Thank you so much! He was on 1ml of Metacam for the first 5 days and then 0.4ml of Baytril twice a day for 10 days, which ended the night of January 30th.
