.....we're picking him up at 5pm. He stopped eating and drinking on Saturday. We suspected a dental problem but actually he had managed to puncture a hole in the back of his mouth, this became full of infection and food. Vet has cleaned it out. He's coming home with 2 lots of antibiotics and metacam. They're sending recovery food and said we can give him pureed veg or baby food .... but a strict liquid diet until we see the vet again on Wednesday.
Any ideas how often I need to feed him? Should I stay up overnight with him or will he be ok for a few hours?

I am very sorry! @sport_billy has given you our hand feeding guide with lots of tips, which will give you the necessary details. If you get enough food into him in several sessions throughout the day until before you go to bed and feed first thing in the morning, then you can get away with a night's sleep. otherwise I would recommend to get up once during the night. Treat him somewhere between our recovery to dental piggy recommendations in terms of frequency and amounts, depending on much he will take on board. Please also make sure that you keep him hydrated. Weigh him daily at the same time either after or before a feeding session so you don't get huge weight fluctuations.

I would also recommend to add some probiotics to the next feed you do after the antibiotic.

UPDATE:
Jaffa is struggling. I'm doing all I can. He's fighting hard too but vet fears he was too critical before we knew. Am feeding/hydrating hourly. He's gone from 96g to 86g between Sunday & Wednesday. Taken all your advice and acted accordingly. Have updated my location - Bolton, Lancs.

I am sorry that your poor boy is struggling so badly. You are doing all you can and you are doing your best.
 
Oh poor boy, I'm so sorry he is poorly. I am a bit confused as to the weights, do you mean he has dropped between 96 and 86g or is he only a baby?
 
At his heaviest he has only ever been 1.1kg.... when we took him to the vets on Sunday after he'd not really eaten on Saturday he was 96g so he'd obviously struggled prior to Saturday but with a robust cage mate we'd not seen him refusing food. He's 22 months old.
He badly deteriorated throughout this morning so the vets have taken him in to get some fluids under his skin and the nurses are going to feed him every hour. Me and Jaffa had a big chat this morning. I've told him if he just wants to sleep then that's fine because he has put up a massive fight this week. So he knows he's fine to go if he really has had enough.
 
Ok, that makes sense now. Bless him, hope the vets can help. You will know when it is time to make the decision though if needed.

Jaffa has perked up a bit after fluids and food. He's going back tomorrow for more of the same. In the meantime big Gaius has provided brotherly squash .... ermm hugs... Still not out of the woods but we'll continue to try our best. He's got us well and truly on a rollercoaster. ...20141016_180206.webp
 
UPDATE:
What a fight my beautiful boy is putting up. After passing a massive sperm rod on Saturday, he perked up considerably. Overnight Sunday to Monday he emptied his veg bowl and tackled a nugget for the first time.
Then came the relapse.... having gained from 890g Thurs to 918g Mon, be Weds he was down to 880g. There was a mass of putrid stinky poo stuck just behind his anus which the vet managed to clean out. His urine sample was all ok. Vet changed his recovery food to a more critical one and they took him in for the day.
He's back on baytril and zantac.
Yesterday his urine has become bloody and he's in pain.... spoke to nurse who said the baytril will fight the infection and just to keep on what we're doing. Gave calpol last night as he was squeaking in pain and I will ring the vets this morning.
How much more does my boy need to go through? It is awful to see him so poorly. He's nearly 2, at the prime of his life so we're praying he'll make it.
 
Poor boy. Hope the vet can help this morning. Hopefully they will be able to give you more pain relief to give at home. Is he pooing ok?

Well the vet has agreed with daily pain relief, he's given us a probiotic /fibre gel too.
Jaffa has lost another 100g, now 870g.
He wants him back in a week or before if needed. They've been great. No charges for consultations, I only pay for meds now.
He's been fast asleep since having metacam so it must be working!
Yes, he is pooing, but only regularly since starting the zantac again on Wednesday.
 
Great that you have pain relief. You may know this already but make sure the probiotic is given at least an hour apart from the antibiotic.
