Jasper My Guinea Pig Isn't Pooing...

Hi i took Jasper to the vets on Wednesday and he had an antibiotic injection and i have baytril to give him twice a day, also critical care food to be syringed. Which i have been doing.
He has not pooed at all and is very uncomfy he is going to the vets this afternoon but wondered if anybody has had similar issues and what i can do to help him?
I rescued him 2 weeks ago he had a patch of hair missing on his back but no signs of ill health although vet said some of this could be stress of being rehomed.

Hi welcome to the forum. I'm sorry he is poorly.

Baytril is notorious for affecting the gut though not usually as much if given by injection as it should bypass the gut. It is likely to be the Baytril you are giving orally that has done it. Have you been giving probiotics too?

Have a look at this thread, probiotics need to be given daily at least an hour after the Baytrill. The thread also tells you about syringe feeding.

The vet will most likely prescribe gut stimulants such as Emeprid (some vets also give Zantac though I do not give this it my own pigs). I also recommend massaging his tummy with an electric toothbrush or anything that vibrates as this can help get things moving too. However, before a gut stimulant or massage therapy is given your vet will need to establish that there isn't a blockage.

He will also need plenty of fluids.

Does his abdomen sound hollow at all if you tap the sides?

As for the bald patch this could be mange mites or even fungal. Did the vet give any treatment for it?

Please also ask the vet for pain relief.

Sorry to hear Jasper's not well - hope your visit to the vet went okay.

Whenever my piggies have been on antibiotics I've given them Pro-C Probiotic by Vetark (you can get it at P@H). It's a powder you dissolve in their water and they absolutely love it. In fact, they sometimes get it simply for a treat! If nothing else it might encourage him to drink more, keeping him hydrated.

Unfortunately i had to have him pts yesterday, he didn't have any mites ect he had already had a spot on teh day i got him and the vet saw no signs of it but had put it down to mange from stress and illness.
He was on the antibiotics and critical care but wasn't drinking even tried suringing it into him and the vet said if no signs of improvement in 48hours to bring him back in which i did and he had gotten worse, so the kindest thing was to have him pts which i'm gutted about as i had not had him long and because i rescued him i don't know what his life was like beforehand, afterwards the vet said she felt he may have had a tumor as could feel a large mass and said it wasn't in the right place to be bowl movements.

It is never a easy decision to make, but you always make it with their wellbeing in mind and is sometimes is the final kindest act of love we can make for them even though it breaks our heart to do it. You may have only had Jasper 3 weeks but in that time he was loved and knew what it was like to be cared for.
