Hi all,
Firstly apologies for the long post, but I'm very, very worried and would love some advice.

Last tuesday a dog (a ruddy great big Alsatian) got into the chalet where we were staying on holiday and attacked our 2 Guinea Pigs. We got to them within 10 minutes and got them straight to the emergency Vets. The most awful thing happen and we lost one of our little boys on the way, we are completely devastated and are grieving and missing him terribly.

The vet examined our other little piggie and he had scrapes, cuts and bruises but no apparent fractures. They kept him in for a few nights but sent him home to us on Thursday, he wasn't eating and they thought it might be due to stress of being in the vets. He is on Metacam, and baytril and eye drops as they thought there may be some nerve damage as he couldn't blink his eye well (though this has improved quite well since) we're also syringe feeding him with Critical Care.

On friday I notice that his two bottom front teeth were separated and moving back and forth independently of each other. I rushed him back to the Vets and they X-rayed him and couldn't find any apparent fractures, they trimmed down his teeth and made sure they were meeting up ok.

We've now travelled back home and have an appointment with our local Guinea Pig go to guy (recommended here on the forum and by the local GP rescue) first thing tomorrow morning. He's still not eating, though he's interested in food but just cant seem to pick it up or if he does pick it up he just drops it again. He's quite bright and perky in himself, wandering around and cleaning himself and doesn't seem to be in pain.

Does anyone know what may be causing his teeth to be separated? And is this causing him not to be unable to eat? I am worried sick and would appreciate any help!

Thanks!

Firstly are you getting food into him at all? a mash made up of pellets or some pureed baby food? others will be on here shortly to give you some help and info ,but are you syringe feeding and syringe drinking him?

We're getting the Critical Care liquid feed into him quite well and he's taking water by syringe too. He's pooing and weeing well so I think his system is ok. I've managed to get very small pieces of cucumber and tomato flesh into him by literally pushing it into his mouth, once it gets to his back teeth he seems ok with it. I haven't tried mashing pellets or baby food or anything I was a bit scared to try anything without advice.

Critical care is good - don't worry about getting the veg into him at the moment - Wibeke or Debbie from furry friends are two who can help you.

I am so sorry about your other pig.

Glad his system seems to be ok now and great that you are getting the critical care into him. We have a hand feeding guide in the Caring for a Guinea Pig sub-section of Health and Illness if you need it.

I am not too sure about the teeth Debbie (Furry Friends) will be best responding on that. My only thought is was there any trauma? did he bash into anything in fright or fall?

Yes there was a lot of trauma, we think the Alsatian had his head in her mouth ( he was very wet when we got to him) as his face was badly bruised and had quite a few small lacerations (teeth marks we think) on his cheeks, nothing needed stitches thankfully. He lost a lot of fur off his face and had a fair bit of swelling too. This has all calmed down quite a bit, and as I say he seems quite perky all things considered. I'm just so worried about him not eating or rather not being able to eat anything.

Thank you for you kind thoughts and wishes!

Poor thing, it sounds like that may have damaged the teeth or jaw. I am not that experienced in dental issues though.
