Well, I thought I'd make a thread following on from Jeff's story (http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=66299)

I brought him home today - his dental issue is that both his upper incisors have snapped off! He was also castrated today.

He's got an indoor pen in my front room, which is actually my dog cage with a "run" attached - when we're home he has the run of the flat, because lets face it, he's not chewing any wires for a while! :))

I've taken a couple of photos of him today, mainly just chilling on the sofa with a pile of food! He's eating much better than I expected, he's just got all his veg chopped up, and his hay chopped up too - he's ploughing through it all!

Eating pellets no problems!

He's staying quiet for the next couple of days, but more photos will follow!
 
He's beautiful! I am glad that he's made it through the op well. Keep weighing him daily and keep checking his bits over the next weeks. Complications like infections and abscesses can sadly happen weeks after the op. It happened to my new boar despite the best care being taken.

Thankfully, incisors grow back very quickly and will sharpen each other as soon as they touch, so Jeff should be able to eat better with each passing day.

He's a gorgous boy! His back end looks very much like my Telyn's!

Thanks - I just wish I could keep him! (I'm sure I'll find a way somehow :D )

I've had castrated pigs before, but they've all been very simple - tbh I'm not sure how good the vet was but they certainly didnt do a very neat job of gluing him back together rolleyes

Jeff is lucky though, as I'm studying all things veterinary, my flatmate is halfway to being a grown up vet, and I work in a vets surgery, so if anything does look like it shouldn't, he gets expert care for free :D

They sent him home with some antibiotics, which I'm going to give him despite all my boys not requiring antibiotics - I trust my vets ability to operate aseptically but I'm not so sure about the vets who castrated him! That was all they gave me, so I called into work and collected some sachets of powdered food (not that food is a problem!), some vit C tablets and some probiotic.

He's currently in his little pen, wheeking away sitting in a pile of hay, nibbling away - happy little piggy!

Edit: I've just seen the extent of the food bins in my front room in the last photo - damn animals taking over my house!
 
if you need to find a home for him we will happily rescue him. but so i know what I'm letting myself in for how many times is he going to need to see a dentist? weekly monthly every few weeks? every few months

really?!

I'm not really sure yet with regards to teeth - speaking to the vets at work today, she said that his bottom teeth will be fine as long as they don't grow long enough to meet his upper gum etc. when he closes his mouth. As his upper teeth grow, the bottom ones will need to be watched to make sure the bottom teeth dont grow too long, and the upper ones too short. Also attention will need to be paid to his molars to make sure they aren't being affected by any malocclusion. So without being able to give a clear answer (sorry!) it generally depends on the growth rate of his teeth.

If you're genuinely interested despite his dental issues, please let me know! I'd be happy to keep hold of him until hes safe to go with females post-castration etc. if this is an issue for you - he's basically good here with me until June-ish.
 
Jeff is lovely, word of warning Jeff needs to have someone who is capable of doing teeth. It's very possible he will need them done again and dental piggies can be very stressful and time consuming.

I'd love to see him in a new home, but I'd hate to see him not be able to get the correct treatment because vets, transport or money so please if you can offer him a good home. Make sure you are prepared for the worse case scenerio!

Debbie AKA Furryfriends pigs require dentals every 12-14 days. My Fred has to go back about his teeth after they overgrew. Not just anyone can do teeth, I am very lucky that I have an excellent vet, time and time again we see pigs suffering due to not getting the correct treatment. Fred's dental cost me £82 it will differ between vets, but thats an idea of cost without GA.

Amanda, you clearly care alot about him so I know you will make sure his potential new home knows that it very possible that he may require ongoing treatment.

He's not going anywhere that isn't totally prepared for him! I'm going to try and introduce him to my three boys in the next few days to see what happens...if I can keep him then I'll be a very happy person! Hoping theres a few nice days during the week where I can put the little run inside the big run to see how they get on!

He's currently sat asleep under my table, after doing the BIGGEST popcorn I've ever seen :(|) Maybe he was happy because he got one over me with his probiotic... :D

Oh lovely to see Jeff in pigtures and I'm glad he's on the mend :)

If he doesnt get on with your boys which with 4 boys would be a miracle :))
then he will be looking forward to some lady company - which with him being a handsome fella I'm sure a loving home will be just around the corner.

Thanks :D

I'm still in two minds about introducing him to my boys, as they are outdoor piggies and as far as I know, Jeff has always been an indoor pig. Then again, when I move, mine will have to be moved indoors anyway so I dunno!
