I was just checking on Jellybean and now she is making a strange low pitched hooting noise! Is this something that has to do with her URI? She was diagnosed with it on Tuesday and has been taking Doxycycline twice a day. Today I took her back to the vet because she stopped pooping for several hours and she was given Critical Care to take twice a day. She's pooping and eating normally again but now I just heard this noise and I'm having another panic attack.

It is likely that a bit a hand feed may have gone the wrong way. Try to give 0.5 ml or half a small syringe or less in one go as that is about one mouthful. ;)

I would not worry as she is already on a good antibiotic and she is doing otherwise fine. Hopefully, the noise will have disappeared by the morning and you can stop worrying!

so sorry to hear Jellybean isn't well.

Hooting can be a sign of food going down the wrong way, for example if they dive into their hay or nuggets & forget to eat properly, just scoffing..... like piggies do
or more seriously if it happens on a regular basis & it isn't just a one off, it can be a sign of heart issues, other signs to look out for are regular weight loss or difficulty maintaining weight,
blue tinges to the extremities.. lips, toes, etc.
problems with reoccurring URI's
I will tag @helen105281 as she has heart piggies & will be able to give you more info on this if required.
I think hers all seem to be doing well with regular meds & enjoy the same quality of life as any other regular healthy piggy.

but hopefully its just a piggy-piggy issue & wont happen again, would keep an eye on her though & seek veterinary advice again if it carries on.

URI's are a real nuisance, took ages for my Ellie to get back on track when she had hers.

I do have heart pigs and they are doing well on their medication. Hopefully this is part of the URI and is not heart related but if she continues to hoot then I can tell you the other symptoms of a heart issue for you to discuss with your vet. It may be that her nose is snuffly from the URI so a product like Bisolvon may help, though am not sure if you can get that in the US.

Thank you, this makes me feel so much better! I was thinking maybe since she's having to be given antibiotics through a syringe and also taking the critical care by syringe, that maybe something just went down the wrong way when she swallowed. I don't make her take the dose all at once, I usually give her a tiny bit, then let her rest for a second and then continue until the dose is all gone. I feed it to her in the corner of her mouth. With her neurological problem, having her hold still is very difficult, but she's been doing really well aside from the crying from being fed through a syringe. She hates it.

Poor girl! Just give her a bit more time to make sure that she can swallow and process everything before giving the next portion. Hand feeding is not a quick operation. You are doing fine; Jellybean is very lucky to have found such a dedicated mommy!

Thank you for the advice! Jellybeans weight has not changed according to the vet. He didn't seemed concerned with weight loss at all. At the visit the main concern was that she couldn't go to the bathroom, but now that's all cleared up. She's been grazing her hay and pellets and is also taking the critical care. The only thing that scared me was the hooting, and it seems to have gone away but I'm still keeping a very close eye on her. Honestly I have now been awake for nearly 48 hours simply because I'm afraid something will happen to her. I just lost her cage mate about 2 months ago and she died very suddenly of acute heart failure, I'm terrified of losing this one too. She came into my life at a very difficult time for me and she has been a blessing. She brings me so much joy and happiness and I just want her to get better. Since I adopted her, I did notice that she a little spot in the corner of her right nostril that does look like it's blue, but I'm not sure if that's just part of her coat or not.

Thank you again! Your kind words mean so much to me! She came into my life as I was diagnosed with endometriosis and being checked for endometrial cancer(which I decided not to find out), and it was just an instant bond with her and I. She has a neurological disorder and my ovaries don't work lol. Kind of silly but it's true haha, it's like we understand eachother.

Please concentrate on getting Jellybean through her current bad patch first before you look for the next can of worms. And please try to get some sleep yourself! Your girl is out of immediate danger, so you are more help to her if you are fitter and calmer yourself. Hand feed her before you go to bed and then again once you have got up in the morning. That is perfectly adequate with your girl eating all by herself. ;)

Cyanosis or blue lips/ears/extremities etc. is evenly visible and is usually accompanied by other signs of acute hear failure like lethargy, heaving breathing from the diaphragm etc. I have lost a couple of young piggies of mine to sudden acute heart failure myself; there is nothing you can do in that situation. Your little patch is most likely just darker skin.

I haven't heard anymore hooting, so I'm just going to continue to keep an extra close eye on her, but if it continues it's back to the vet for the 3rd time. My poor baby.. I'm not sure if we have that medicine here but if she does end up going back to the vet, I will certainly ask about it.

Bisolvon is a powder that works on thick mucus in the airways by making the mucus more fluid and thinner in consistency. It is advisable when you are dealing with a piggy with crusty eyes and nose, snot or coughing. I am sure that US vets have got an equivalent product, but from what you have been saying so far, this has not been the case with Jellybean.

Yeah she has none of those symptoms, she doesn't even have a runny nose anymore. She just sounds stuffy now.

Can I please remind all posting members that Jellybean is being treated for rhinitis symptoms that may be an URI, but could also likely be a dust allergy of some sort. There are no grounds whatsoever to bring heart issues into play!

While I appreciate that forum members are eager to help, I would urgently ask them to please be very careful in bringing serious conditions into play without being in full possession of the facts or able to judge the seriousness of a problem.

It is an aim of this forum to reassure and support any members with ill piggies as much as we can to help their recovery, not to throw them into yet another panic.

Apologies if i alarmed, panic'd or threw you into turmoil in any way with this previous posting, that wasn't my intention
i just wanted to make you aware of heart issue symptoms in addition to the "hooting" if it happened on a regular basis/ persisted.

Glad she's eating & pooping again now
i hope jellybean makes a full recovery from her little episode, & healing vibes coming your way by the bucketload.:luv::tu:

Oh no you're fine, I was making myself paranoid, but I'm learning to handle one thing at a time. Everyone's support and advice is much appreciated. Jellybean and I both got some rest and she seems to be doing much better, she's not so stuffy and I haven't heard any hooting either. I have faith my piggy is going to be just fine, she's a very strong willed piggy:)

:Dimage.webp image.webp Jellybean is feeling much better! Appetite is back to normal, no stuffiness and hardly any sneezing has occured! She just took her second dose of antibiotics today and insisted that she stay out to play. Half an hour has gone by and she's still running around popcorning and kicking her legs being really feisty and playful! Now we are currently enjoying a snack together! I'm an overjoyed mom right now!

aww glad she's feeling better, they dont half worry us don't they?!
She is a gorgeous little girl  :)
She has lovely markings :)

Hope to see lots more pigtures of your lovely lady ;)

Thankyou for sharing

Thank you so much! Yes they are so good at worrying us! I'll be sure to post more pictures! One of these days, I'll get around to fixing my computer, I have tons of pictures of her on there. But for now I'm stuck using my iphone, which is almost out of memory. I wanted to post a video of Jellybean so everyone could see how playful she was tonight, but I guess I can't do it from my phone.

image.webp Jellybean would like to say good morning to everyone! And she'd also like everyone to know that she had her follow up appt with the vet yesterday evening and he said I'm recovering wonderfully from my URI and also said I'm right on track with my weight. I'm now officially 7 and a half months old. Thank you to everyone who has helped support my mama as she takes extra special care of me!=]❤️
