Today is not my day *sigh*

Jennifer's scab came off again to reveal a huge, very nasty smelling puss filled hole.

I thought the cuts would be ok they had scabbed and when she knocked a scab off before it bled but didn't reveal a huge hole in her :(
It's got me REALLY concerned that the same thing might be happening under her other scabs, so I was wondering if I should maybe try to knock them off, or just leave them...

I've bathed the one that's open in some warm water to get all the puss away to which it started bleeding then put some guinea pig antibacterial powder on it.

Jennifer didn't like the cleaning bit the when the hole was left alone she just carried on as normal.

Vet tomorrow I think!

Oh no poor little Jennifer, I can't really give any advice but just wanted to say that I hope she will be ok xx

Leave the scabs on they are the best cover there could be. This is typical behaviour of a chronic abscess, you just have to hope that the condition is improving, albeit very slowly. Think weeks, not days.

Will jennifer be ok to be left with other piggys or would seperating her for some R&R be good?
she's just over a month old

Should I try and cover the wound at all?

It is at your discretion, you could separate her from the group for a short time.
I would not cover the wound. Firstly it would be difficult to cover and also with what do you cover it?
I am just a little concerned about the infection at her age. At four weeks old her immune system will not be fully developed, I would keep the thought in mind that she may not recover. I have had adult pigs with chronic, untreatable abscesses and the survival time has been upto a year.

thank you for your honestly AP
It had crossed my mind that being so young and going through so much would be too much for her in the long run...

I really really hope that Jennifer is ok and that she will be able to fight whatever comes her way. I'm keeping my fingers crossed tightly for her and you. x

OH NO. Poor Jennifer,I so hope she's okay. Let us know what the vets say wont you?

oh dear poor jennifer, after treating pus wounds on tango i think it made me feel worse than him (had to deal with him on an empty tummy), she is such a little mite to have had such an eventful life. Sending all my best wishes

Oh noooooooooooooo 8...8...8...
Whee all hope that little Jennifer's abscess starts to heal now that this latest 'plug' has come out :p
HEALING WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEKS xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hey everyone, Jennifer's wound has stayed clean, the pus hasn't come back at all so I'm hoping that that this will give it time to heal and that she'll be ok.

She's eating and drinking and running around fine, without looking closely you'd never know there was anything wrong with her!

Jennifer's a little fighter, she's proved that so here's hoping that she can defy any odds and get through this as well.

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for your well wishes and healing vibes, and also to furryfriends, the information she's given me is invaluable.

The way that everyone comes together on this forum in bad times is amazing and I honestly feel that I am surround by friends

Love to you all, Kira x
WHEEEEEEEK WHEEEEK WHEEEK, Jennifer xxxxx

I am glad that Jennifer is better again!
Sending her my vibes and hope that she can fight off that abscess!

I was gutted to see Jennifer had another medical thread, things had been going so well! She is in great hands and I have every faith in you that you will do all you possibly can to get her through this. Your love for her will comfort her and help her significantly. Will keep my fingers crossed that the abscess heals fully, quickly.

Big hugs to you and Jennifer! xx

So glad to hear that she still seems happy in herself and that she still has her appetite, fingers crossed for a full and speedy recovery x

quick update, thought I did one the other day but I musn't have pressed the button for it to actually be posted! :red

Jennifer's cut did get some more puss but only a very small amount which I had to squeeze out much to her dismay. :( I felt like such a bad mummy but I knew I had to get the pus out :(

She still seems happy in herself, eating drinking, wheeking and even popcorning :(|)

I do however have a quick question...
Will Jennifer now associate me with pain? With her being so young I'm scared she'll grow up associating me with pain since I've had to clean wounds ect
Sorry if this is a daft question I'm just really worried she'll grow up hating me...

Hi Rawr, I have only just picked up on this thread. My Jessica had a cancerous tumour removed from her throat/neck area, everything went well (I have put this up already) and to cut a long story short she has now developed a abcess where the tumour was, it is quite a big one. I took her down to vets on Saturday, vet stuck a needle into it but it was just like cheese, yuk, so she said to leave Jessica at vets, they would get all stuff out and give me a call. When I went to pick her up she had a big (and I mean big) hole where the wound from removal of tumour was and vet told me to keep this hole open. Vet gave me a bottle of what looked like iodine mixture, a couple of syringes (without needles in) and she said to fill the syringe with this mixture and put it into the hole and squirt it hard twice a day and fill the syringe 6 times each time so as to wash the abcess stuff out and then put some Manuke honey into the other syringe and squirt that into the hole as well and around the outside of wound. I have got to keep the scabs off and the hole open to get rid of the nasty stuff. Poor Jessica is so very good when I do all this, she seems to just accept it and the vets said she was very good as well.:)p

I don't think so, because even though you are having to treat wounds etc. you are doing so with love and care. She'll feel the love! It's worth making sure you give her a tender cuddle and a special tasty treat after each "treatment" session.

My mum said to me yesterday, when I was worming the pigs and had just given Elijah and Errol their doses, to give them some nice food quick so they don't associate me with unpleasant stuff! It is a worry with young and new pigs, but the unpleasant jobs make up a very small part of their experiences - the rest is filled with love, comfort and fun. :)

Food overcomes fear.
You will often find that the pig "looks forward" to abscess draining etc because of the promise of food to come. Sometimes it is a good thing that they have a simple mind!
