Jerry's dental issues are becoming so severe that I may need to make a very sad and difficult decision in the near future. His teeth are now growing straight from the gum into his cheek causing ulceration.
The ethos of the sanctuary is 'to extend good quality life, but never to prolong death', and right now I am questioning whether I am doing exactly what I said I would never do.
Since Wednesday I have been using Neem toothpaste in Jerry's mouth, as I have read reports of it healing mouth ulceration, and I want to try every possibility. I think this may be helping, and Jerry is taking syringe food fairly well. However, both Simon and I question how this can heal the ulceration when it is constantly being rubbed by teeth. The only hope is that if Jerry feels more comfortable he might feel more inclined to eat for himself, which in turn just might help the dental situation.
I am going to discuss with Simon the possibility of filing Jerry's teeth every five days, rather than weekly, for a few weeks to see if that helps in conjunction with the Neem. However, unless there is significant improvement in the ulceration, if will be time to help Jerry over the Rainbow Bridge. It will break my heart to do this, but I have to do what is right for Jerry.
Funds need to be raised to enable Jerry to receive additional treatments, and any help would be very much appreciated.
