Little Jerry hasn't been doing too well lately, and was looking quite poorly at the end of last week. He has been needing weekly dentals since arriving at the Sanctuary earlier this year, but has maintained good quality life and has been happy and lively. By last Friday he was dribbling and losing weight despite lots of syringe feeding and just generally didn't look like he was enjoying life anymore. We made the decision to start him on Zithromax, in case there was a tooth root abscess brewing, and to burr his teeth under GA this week. Jerry normally has weekly conscious dentals, but his mouth is such a mess that occasional dentals under GA really seem to benefit him.

Since starting on the zithromax he has perked up a lot, the dribbling has stopped and he is showing interest in life again. We are hoping that the dental tomorrow will give him the very best chance to begin eating for himself again, and he will revert back to conscious dentals from next week.

Although Jerry's dental issues are only manageable and not curable, if he could start to eat for himself the regularity of the conscious dentals could be reduced.

I am going to be on edge all day tomorrow, but I know he's going to be in the very best of hands.

The ethos of the Sanctuary is to extend good quality life, but never to prolong death.

Hopes all goes well for Jerry tomorrow, keeping him in our thoughts x x

Sending healing thoughts to Jerry - hope he'll feel better soon.

Hope all goes well for Jerry, he's in the best hands with you & Simon :)

Ziggy is doing really well by the way, it's like she never had an op & you can barely see her scar :)

Thinkinf of you and little Jerry today, have my fingers crossed.

xx

Just been to pick Jerry and Ben up, and he's looking great. His mouth shuts properly now and his jaw is back into alignment, so all we need now is for him to start eating. He is taking softened nuggets beautifully from a spoon. Maybe he will move on to a knife and fork soon lol

Simon wants to see him again next Wednesday. Now comes the hard work, and that's teaching him to eat for himself again, but I am determined that he will get the very best possible chance. It's very unlikely he will ever be cured, but if we can manage his dental issues whilst he has a good quality life, then that's going to be good enough.

Yeahhhhhhhhhh for Jerry xxxxxxxxx :<>

So glad to hear it all went well. Come on Jerry, just think of all the things you'll be able to nosh if only you just get started, I'd say Mummy will be soooo pleased you'll get anything you ask for :x

Am so pleased to hear such good news about Jerry. My Peanut Butter was diagnosed with dental problems from 2 months old, but with regular monthly treatments he is now almost 15 months old and still going strong. He is my vegie terrorist, squealing at the top of his lungs for vegies several times a day. I hope Jerry continues to do well as I understand the need to give the little guy the best and longest life possible.

Jerry is bright and happy this morning. Later today I am going to start a new thread where I can update daily how Jerry is doing. It's important to remember that all dental piggies are different, and having dealt with many over the years I haven't yet found two who progress in the same way.

Jerry is probably the most complex dental piggie we have dealt with, and is most definitely on a par with Archie, who also had dreadful dental issues, but had two extra years of good quality life thanks to the wonderful work of Simon Maddock and the suppportive care I was able to offer him here at the Sanctuary.

Hi, glad to hear Jerry is doing well. I need some advice please. I have a piggie who is only eating liquid food from a syringe. I took her to my vet who cut her back teeth just over a week ago under GA but she is still not eating hay, veggies etc just the syringe food. Took her back this week as I was concerned & the vet gave her a liquid painkiller & told us to see how she went. If I take her back again he is going to xray her mouth but obviously her teeth are growing back as she is not wearing them down by eating. The vet wasn't sure what could be done next.

The piggie in question is lively & has bright eyes & really wants to eat her food but can't seem to chew it. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do next?

Many thanks

Was the dental done under GA or with the piggie conscious? Has the vet said anything about regular checks and filing of the teeth until she starts eating again. Teeth grow very quickly and like you say, they will soon be overgrown again.

I notice you're in Cambridgeshire. Is there any way you could get your piggie to Northampton to see Simon Maddock at The Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic? Simon is a very experienced guinea pig vet and treats guinea pigs with dental issues from all over the country.
