Teenage Guinea Pig
I only knew Jess for six weeks yet the house seems empty without her. Irascible, disruptive, bossy, obstinate, strong-willed...these were just some of her finer qualities! She was the first guinea pig I ever held when I went to pick them up from the rescue and the first one brave enough to explore their new home. Reminding me of a mini sheepdog, I eventually settled on Jess as a suitably collie-ish name. She humoured Stanley as de facto leader but would often compete with him in the rumblestrutting stakes and she took pleasure in winding up Primrose. When my family came round to see the guinea pigs she behaved impeccably, quietly sharing a bowl of pellets with Stanley - until they left the room and then she started bullying him away from the food! On our few attempts at lap time she was more interested in wandering off and would nudge me out of the way with her head. I don't think she would have ever become a lap pig; the only time she relaxed and rested on me was on her last night. After a while she learnt from Primrose that I was the bringer of food. The two of them would excitedly run around together at breakfast and tea time, wheeking for their vegetables. Her first attempts at wheeking were little rasps until she found her voice. They'd both climb up the grid in anticipation and Jess would bump her little black and pink nose against mine. I think Stanley and Primrose are probably going to have a more peaceful time of it now but I miss her so much.
