Jesse Has Pneumonia

I have malt paste for my hamsters but I am not sure if pigs can have it. I would personally opt for Metatone tonic which you can get from the supermarket. Message me if you decide to use it and I will give you the doses that I use. It is supposed to help stimulate the appetite.

In answer to your diuretic question, it is not good to be on diuretics long term but if he still has fluid on his chest then he needs them. That's why the extra fluids are important.

Boyfriend at vets now, just texted saying
Metaclopramide in am and pm, getting eating. 0.1 each time.
Metacam 0.3mls in pm anti inflammatory.
Antibiotics which we have can be diluted if easier. Each am.
Have asked him 3 times to ask about metatone...!

Thanks... Would it be too much considering what he's just been prescribed?

No not at all, is just a vitamin supplement.

That seems a low dose of Metachlopromide.

What antibiotic have you been given? I can't remember if we have covered it already but he will also need probiotics.

Did the vet not think he needed any more diuretic? how is his breathing?

Marbocyl or something like that? Mentioned in this thread somewhere... 0.4ml a day. No mention of diuretic as lungs sound clearer apparently. Wish I could have gone to vet but my boss is a nightmare . his breathing is still strained but reckon that won't stop overnight. He had a hydration thing at the vet's though, some saline infusion. It was a different vet as the one he's seen is now away for a week and this guy seemed keen on encouraging his antibiotics to work.

I did however make up my own 'monster mash'... His pellets mashed with water, some Critical Care and some 100% veg baby food (including pumpkin for fibre) and I got 6 x 1ml syringes straight down him!

We appreciate your ongoing support loads. I uploaded these.. I am telling myself they look worse because of his weight loss.. These are just now... Maybe on one you can hear him?

I can't hear anything but to be honest I can't hear much at all today due to having something wrong with my ears, possibly an infection, so hopefully someone else could listen. However, it is very pronounced and seems quite rapid. I would be inclined to ask for an xray so they can see if there is any fluid (if I recall correctly they suggested it but didn't do it?). Is he nodding as he breathes? Does he have any mucous? If he has mucous then Bisolvon may help too.

We can't afford an xray, this is all going on a credit card we're trying to clear... I feel awful typing that when a life is at stake. Wouldn't the diuretic clear any fluid?

Ahh gotcha. I did send him back to the vet for a third but... What's the saying... When you want something doing you do it yourself! Bf didn't ask when he was due back either. Argh!

Ahh apparently the vet said diuretic today could do more harm than good as he dehydrated and his breathing is less crackly. His breathing is not at its worst but it has been better. Damn I hate this.

It's difficult finding the balance I know. Fluids are so important when a pig is on diuretics.

The reason I mentioned an xray is that it would show up anything else that was going on with the lungs etc.

If his breathing doesn't change though it would be a good idea to get a second opinion, possibly at the vets I recommended in Camden.

Good idea and worth considering how to pay for. Wondering if they're open on the weekend. Just syringing more down him... Prob about 20ml of food down him since 7pm which is a miracle. Hopefully he'll feel stronger but he's not keen on drinking from bowl. He has to pull through! Helen you are a font of knowledge x

20ml is good.

The other thing to take into account is that the antibiotics need to kick in too.

Tomorrow will be his fourth dose. Fingers crossed, he clicks when he breathes still pretty much all the time. That stopped on weds for a bit though. He's sat on me being stubborn, whenever I move him he comes back and his body temperature seems good too so we're off to bed for a bit, up at 4am for another feed then 6am for more then work! Goodnight and thanks again xx

Oh god he just did his weird head falling to the side thing again. Was doing this Sunday/Mon before the vet. Thought I saw him do it earlier but wasn't sure.

Now he only did it once. He's now in the hospital box with more energy than displayed all night... Well, you know that means a good sniff haha. We clean it every night for the morning toilet investigation. Will keep you posted, you're keeping us sane x

Morning - thank you @GloriousGuineaGirl! He is still with us, not v happy to take from syringe but he tends to improve with this as the day goes on. We were up at 4am feeding in the night and again at 8 (including a celery nibble), and now my OH is with him.
Not much toileting in the night, but I did wonder maybe he's been eating some of them so there's less than there actually has been?

He is going to call the Camden specialist that @helen105281 recommended and have emailed list of questions (would xray be useful, about metatone, a probiotic and would another diuretic help). I am keen to know if an xray would diagnose him once and for all. His breathing is still laboured but OH reckons it's easing off.

The vet may not know about Metatone as it is just a vitamin supplement used in piggy circles to help boost a poorly pig.

That's great you are getting a second opinion.

AHh I see :)

Well Jo, the apparently GP specialist is away til Monday however the receptionist is calling her and getting back to us. If we can keep him going til Monday we may see her - apparently it's very expensive though :(

I think they are expensive but worth it. Abi_nurse on here is one of the vet nurses.

If his breathing does not improve over the weekend though please speak to your usual vet about diuretics and explain to them that you would be giving additional fluids to prevent dehydration.

Oh wow. I did not know it would be that much. I suppose it's because they are a referral practice mainly.

Edit. I have just seen on the Recommended vets thread that they neutered a pig for £52 so am wondering if you were given the correct information.
