I am completely heartbroken to say that we had to make the decision to have Johnny put to sleep last night and it was the hardest decision we have ever had to make. He had a bladder stone that was situated above his bladder, he was due to be x-rayed again at the weekend to see if it had moved enough for it be operated on. However in the last few days he went drastically downhill and lost over 200g. He was in a lot of pain, I sat with him on Tuesday night until 3.30am and felt so helpless, he seemed brighter in the morning and when I took him to the vets he was still slightly brighter. However we knew that the pain was still there and though the vet could have given him even stronger meds we felt it was not fair to let him suffer any longer especially is the stronger the painkiller the more damage to his kidneys. He was not himself at all the last few days, he was usually not a cuddly pig at all -would fling himself about just to get away, but he just wanted to cuddle up to me, and this told us that it was time to say goodbye. We were there until the end, the vet even let us be there when he was given the gas to send him to sleep. Then he passed away in my arms, with us telling him how much we loved him.

Here's his story. He came to live with us on 8 May 2010 aged 2 years old. He was from Sue's rescue (Hillsbrooke). We had been looking for a friend for Gertie and they seemed to like each other straight away. I'll never forget him doing a flying hump when they were bonded and Gert moved to one side and he fell flat on his face. He lived with Gertie and eventually the rest of the herd, he was by no means boss but was very well respected by all. He loved Gertie more than anything and also Honey, we would quite often see the three of them sitting together.

In the last few weeks he learnt to love syringes and very time he had his meds he would fight with us to keep the syringe. Even last night he still wanted to play with the syringe when I gave him some water.

Love you so much J man, go play with your Gertie and Honey at the bridge, they've been waiting for you.

Here's a selection of pictures:

Bladder stones are so cruel :( gorgeous pics too
Rip little fella xx

I am so sorry to hear that Johnny had gone downhill so badly that you had to let him go. Bladder stones are such a gutting thing to come down with!

Johnny was such a gorgeous boy and fit in so well with your girls! I hope that Gertie and Honey are OK without their best friend.

Helen & Ross my thought have been with you since reading he wasn't at all well.

Sorry I sent a pm a little too late this morning not realising Johnny had already gone to the bridge :(

He'll be having fun reunited with his two special girls.

He looked very contented taking his syringe food didn't he!
I have sat here in tears reading his story, I have Tetley in my arms and their faces look very alike, how these small creatures get right into our hearts eh.

Big hugs all round, hope your girls are ok.

Some lovely photos of great memories :)

Thinking of you, as I know now first hand how hard it is!

Hugs xx

Thank you. I never knew how badly stones were, it never even made it to the bladder!

It had been horrible watching him fade other months of trying to get him back to health. His weight loss other the last week has been the tail spin of a loss from 1400g a couple of months ago. It is so hard and makes you feel impotant to see how he was suffering and slowly fading before our eyes. The last few weeks has been stronger pain killers at higher doses that were stopping to work from last week. His last few days were spent in pain and not even able to feed himself beyond a brief nibble. It was quite a shock to see how this once massive, lumbering beast of a boar had become so weak and tired. It was hard to make that decision for him, but any further care available would of been putting him back into pain for what would be a just a few more days (or week if lucky) of misery.

I am grateful to have known and loved him for all of his happy life with us. He is definately with his Gert and Honey now, probably still being bullied into submission by them.

I'm so sorry to hear the news made me cry, theres so many of us losing piggies at the moment its very sad :(

Thank you so much everyone, am completely gutted. Was awful at the vets as not only were we there to have Johnny PTS we also had to pick up Ronaldo hamster's ashes who died last week and we lost Gordon hamster the week before that. I thought this year woud be better than last year but it's not so far.

Karina, thank you so much, I really do wonder myself sometimes.
