Senior Guinea Pig
I am completely heartbroken to say that we had to make the decision to have Johnny put to sleep last night and it was the hardest decision we have ever had to make. He had a bladder stone that was situated above his bladder, he was due to be x-rayed again at the weekend to see if it had moved enough for it be operated on. However in the last few days he went drastically downhill and lost over 200g. He was in a lot of pain, I sat with him on Tuesday night until 3.30am and felt so helpless, he seemed brighter in the morning and when I took him to the vets he was still slightly brighter. However we knew that the pain was still there and though the vet could have given him even stronger meds we felt it was not fair to let him suffer any longer especially is the stronger the painkiller the more damage to his kidneys. He was not himself at all the last few days, he was usually not a cuddly pig at all -would fling himself about just to get away, but he just wanted to cuddle up to me, and this told us that it was time to say goodbye. We were there until the end, the vet even let us be there when he was given the gas to send him to sleep. Then he passed away in my arms, with us telling him how much we loved him.
Here's his story. He came to live with us on 8 May 2010 aged 2 years old. He was from Sue's rescue (Hillsbrooke). We had been looking for a friend for Gertie and they seemed to like each other straight away. I'll never forget him doing a flying hump when they were bonded and Gert moved to one side and he fell flat on his face. He lived with Gertie and eventually the rest of the herd, he was by no means boss but was very well respected by all. He loved Gertie more than anything and also Honey, we would quite often see the three of them sitting together.
In the last few weeks he learnt to love syringes and very time he had his meds he would fight with us to keep the syringe. Even last night he still wanted to play with the syringe when I gave him some water.
Love you so much J man, go play with your Gertie and Honey at the bridge, they've been waiting for you.
