With My Piggies :)
Hi there,
#wondered if someone could help.

As the weather has been extremely hot, ive been doing some research on how to best protect my piggies from all sorts of nasties that are around in the warmer months. The most notable one being fly strike. Currently my piggies live in a C&C which is situated in our dining room next to the back door, as most of you will know i recently found out that my boar is actually now a very pregnant sow - so wanting to offer them some protection i was wanting to use johnsons insecticidal spray to help protect against fly strike - but the problem i have is my pregnant girlie - is this product safe to use on her?

I would suspect that it cannot be used on her - but wanted to check first.

Thanks for any help/advice.

I'm inclined to agree with your suspicions that it should be avoided, I'd avoid using any products on her that are not essential, this includes flystrike protection.

Flystrike can be a problem in pigs but environmental protection - e.g. cage freshening 2x daily - is the most important step to take. Flystrike is not often reported in guineas and skin conditions like fungal infections and parasitic problems (lice, mites) are often prevalent in warmer weather, so a general habit of refreshing dirty bedding 2x daily, disinfecting the cage 1-2x weekly and bathing the pigs routinely should go a long way to notably reducing the chances of any skin problems and flystrike.
