I have a fairly young guinea pig, she's roughly 3 months old. I took her to the vet because she hops when she run, nut only when she runs. She walks fine. She has a sedated exam on the 13. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with joint problems in young guinea pigs? We got her and another young female at the same time, and the cage mate in fine.

Hello welcome to the forum, sorry to hear you piggy is hoping. Can you video her doing this? Is she walking okay? How long has she done this?

What is the vet doing in the exam? xray?

She's been doing it since we got her, about a month maybe 6 w walking weeks.walking she's ok, she kicks her back feet out a little bit. The vet said in the last visit that her hips felt loose. She wants her to get a full orthopedic exam, sedated x-ray, and joint exam.

Please let us know what they find, sending love to your little piggy, what is her name?

Well I will be keeping my fingers crossed for Snickers tomorrow and that you get some answers.

One of my sows do's a simular thing, but she was born with a congenital head tilt, !when she arrived she just had the head tilt but whent on to develop a strange gait and now she walks on 1 front and the opposite rear, and propels her self by pushing with her other 2 , (difficult to explain ) anyway she often hops when walking ! Vet said it was a spinal problem!
It doesn't cause any sort of problem and she enjoys life to the full !

It's her hind legs only, it doesn't hinder her she's the fastest of my # girls. I just want to know it's it's something serious or life threatening.

I wouldn't think so smokywolf, mine has been like that for a wile now and never needed any pain meds , in fact if I remember coerctly my vet John D said more harm would be done to her kidneys buy putting her on long term pain meds

My vet is concerned that it's a nutrition problem from where I got her. She was thinking MBD. But she wants to confirm before treatment.

My girl, Baby, who is about 3-4 years old has stiff joints all over her body,
The vet said we should give her vitimin suppliments for vit C which I put on her veg, it's the only was she takes it well.
It's hard to get Baby to eat enough veg with Vit C in it so they think this is the reason for her stiffness among other things from backyard breeders not looking after their stock very well.

She was also hopping when she walked and ran but that was because she had hurt her ankle joint which was made worse by the stiffness,

It sounds like your piggie could be suffering from bad nutrition in the past like your vet said.
Hopefully it's an easy fix like it was for Baby and she can start getting better! :)

She had her appointment today, poor thing was sedated twice in 12 hours. They said that x-rays look normal, and the orthopedic exam went well. Just watch her and try to video tape her running.
