I'm planning on getting 2 rescue's from the RSPCA. I was in my local P@H today & in their rescue centre there was a guinea pig that they said needed to be housed one their own as it did not get on with others.

Is it likely to be that it just didn't get on with the other one it was living with or are there some who really do just want to be on their own?

Sorry if it's a daft question, I'm new to guinea pigs :)

guinea pigs are social creatures and need to be with there own kind what gender was it ? :-)

It was a female. They said before it came in to their rescue centre there had been attempts made to bond it. There were 2 guinea pigs in seperate runs, both in the rescue centre, both saying they couldn't be put with other guinea pigs. Just made me wonder if it was a case of not really trying to bond them or if some really are better off on their own?

A few guinea pigs don't get on with others; but they are usually quite happy living next to others for company.

I can imagine though someone rehoming it as their only pet, fine if it gets lots of company but a worry if it's out in the garden all by itself. I've not seen anyone ever buy 2 rabbits or 2 guinea pigs from P@H yet, I'm not saying it doesn't happen but I've only ever seen people buy them individually :(

Yes, and that saddens me as well! Guinea pigs should have company of their own kind - but shops won't ask questions...

After my first two, which WERE shop bought as companions, as I fell for a pair of big speaking eyes (enough to give me several sleepless nights!) I have always adopted from rescues and have had far better experiences in terms of information about the animals, support and health. That same shop piggy was pregnant...

I think it's abit like us humans...we don't get on with a certain person but we geton with certain others instead.
This piggie may not have got on with the other piggie it was with but maybe if it was housed with another different one, it would be fine.
