Hello

As some of you know i have just got my son a new guinea pig called Jonny. I was just wondering how easy it is to get him a friend? i was told by the pet store that the reason he was in there aboption corner cuz he did not get on with the other ones in his old home. Everytime i get him out i end up being peed on. is this normal not normal?

He takes food off me really nice what fruit and veg can they not eat?

Also is it easy to get the snip for them? was thinking if he dont get on with other boys could he have the snip and have a girlfriend with out babys as i dont think i could do with looking after babies

Thanks
Hannah

Hi

When I got Lacey I was told she couldnt be with other piggies due to fighting and then after much advice from here I took her to meet another piggy at the RSPCA, they bonded instantly and have been inseperable ever since, she is now living happily with my other piggy who is a nueted boar.

I know you can take Jonny to boar dating to find him a mate that way you wont need to put him through an operation but there are lots more people with much more knowledge on here who will give you valuable advice.

I just wanted to say that just because the pet shop say you cant pair him up, isnt necessarily true, they will get depressed on their own.

Good luck

Whereabouts are you?

It is well worth trying boar dating at a reputable rescue first, even if you have to travel a bit. But you can be reassured that the bonding is well supervised by an expert and that Johnny will only come home with a mate if he has found a proper friend, so you don't have worry so much about fall outs.
A boar bond depends very much on character compatibility and mutual liking. It takes time and experience, which is what most people are not willing (or knowledgeable enough) to do; they just stick two boars together and if that doesn't work out, a piggy is quickly branded as unbondable, especially if the fall out happened throughout the hormonal months and the boar in question happened to be the aggressor.
Here is the boar dating blog of one of the rescue ladies active on the forum; you may find it very interesting. http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=59233

Neutering is you second option. It is however more costly and depends on you finding a good and experienced neutering vet as post op complications are sadly not all that rare. Even if you go down that route, I would strongly recommend dating Johnny at a rescue afterwards to see who he gets on best with. It is makes for a much happier bond!

If you are so close to South Wales, I should contact Suzy at GPR as she is expert on boar dating!
