Just a little rant

When is enough actually enough?
I adopted three guinea pigs all in the span of 24 hours as these little guys just pulled on my heart strings, which is fine but I'm wondering when do people actually learn?

I adopted first off Sinae as her owner was going to set her loose in the garden as she was considered an effort as she is heavily pregnant and will be giving birth any day now.

Then the next day in a pet store I saw this little girl that is most likely crossed between a teddy and a rex and was being chased by boys and is also most likely in the early stages of being pregnant. You'd think the pet shop would have known *sighs*

And today I have adopted Sinae's husband because he is getting depressed with out her and so their previous owner has said he's given up on guinea pigs, he thought they were easy pets.

It just makes me sad that these little guys are so easily gotten and then so easily gotten rid of, if that makes sense? I've always had an attitude when you have a pet, its for life. It might not have been like that in my childhood but as an adult it certainly is.

Who else has come across this attitude? even my own mother says why do you bother? and I said back to her well why did you have children? to me its almost the same feelings. I hope I'm not alone but I just felt like ranting, hope here was ok to do so.

It never ends and believe me after Christmas its going to get worse. I expect to be helping out Sokel rescue with fosters.

I found fostering far more beneficial than just taking them in to keep although I do have 15 of my own. Guinea Pig rescues need fosterers so maybe its something you could look into if you had space and time to commit.

Don't worry you're not alone, I think we have these thoughts daily. :)

Sigh, I agree. I can't begin to say how much this upsets me and makes me so so angry :<>

I took the time to educate myself before I got my first pigs, but I was 32 so old enough to know to do that maybe?

I can't believe it isn't common knowledge that pets take time, effort and money. People never realise until they've got their pet, realise the effort, have enough then want to "throw them in the bin". Obviously to us types, they're not "effort" they're simply wonderful and part of the family.

Are people born WRONG who abuse animals and can just toss them aside?

As for "why bother". If you've got all day, I could tell you all about my wonderful 4 boys, how much fun they are and how much I love being their mum. As you girlies know, spend time with them and then you'll know "why"!

No, no, we understand. :)
I'd love to take on more pigs but no room at home. I have a spare cage so would consider fostering, but again, room is an issue and I would have to convince OH. Plus, could only take one as have Nero 2 cage... :(

I agree JayneG i had done my research before i got them (although i still have tonnes to learn!) My piggies are much harder to look after than i imagined but i could never part with them especially like Beaver said if they were pregnant. How can people be so heartless? They say a dog is for life and not just for christmas but this definately applies to all animals and if i had the space i would adopt many more!

How could they just turf Sinae out into the garden? 8...

Poor little girl. I could never part with any of my piglets, let alone abandon them in the cold. I don't know how you guys that take in rescues manage not to strangle some of these people. pow-pow

Unfortunately not everyone values them like we do! They are seen as disposable, sadly, as the '100 dead pigs found in bags' story very graphically illustrates.

Like S&T said, it will only get worse over Christmas, although with my last indoor cage now being used by Zippy to recover from his abcess, lord knows where we'll put them if they do come in! We'll find room somehow.

You guys are amazing
sometimes I do feel almost a little nutty for having all
these babies but in a way they really are my furbabies as
I don't see having children in the near future so I get to nurture
this way but I'd do it even if I had children.

Yes it really does want to make me strangle some people
with their attitudes, even pet shop owners who think running
a pet shop is easy and you can tell they really are just in it
for the money. I think its sad, in a way I wish that it was law
that for companion pets, fish, rabbits, dogs, cats, guinea pigs
and the likes that you need to have a lisence before owning one
of these animals. It would save a lot of problems and heartache I'm
sure.

I'm so happy to have found such like minded people though
it is refreshing to say the least, if any of you want to read whats happened
with Sinae and her babies you can read in the pregnancy section
as sadly its not good news.

I think having a lisence to own a pet would be a very good idea as people would take it more seriously and not treat them as if they are "disposable". It might make those ignorant people stop and think hang on this is an animal not a toy for me to discard when i am bored of it!)
