I would just like to remind people (especially those with outdoor guinea pigs) that now is the time that you should be paying particular attention to the weather.
If you are unable to move your piggies indoors, in to a shed or unused garage, hutches should be moved to a very sheltered area of the garden, have a wind/rain cover, insulation, mountains of hay and anything else you use to keep your piggies warm e.g fleecy beds, snugglesafes, cardboard boxes stuffed with hay etc.
My piggies live free range in a shed. I arrived home from work this morning and it was FREEZING. Cars were iced up and there is frost on the ground.
Thankfully my piggies had their fleecy beds, hutches filled with heaps of hay and fleece blankets draped across their sleeping areas to keep off the chill last night but they could have done with their snugglesafes had I have known it was going to get that cold
It was 2 degrees at 3am in Oldham Manchester.
Do you have a back up plan for if the weather turns really bad? When the temperature falls in to the minus temperatures on a regular basis, my piggies will be coming indoors.
Keep regular checks on water bottles to make sure the drinking water isn't constantly freezing. Old thick socks wrapped over the water bottles can help prevent this.
Remember to monitor your guinea pigs weights as a guinea pig feeling the cold could lose weight by trying to keep warm.
