Hello! My two boys have been having treatment for URIs for around 3 weeks now, one piggy is slightly better and the other has gotten a little worse. I'm just wondering about something that might be preventing them getting better. They spend a lot of time in their hideys, which I change frequently to stop them getting bored. They use waffle block house, pigloos and cosy sacs. They aren't the cleanest of pigs in their toilet habits and will just go where they lie and I do try my best to ensure that they aren't lying in their urine and getting damp. But I'm wondering that, if they are spending a lot of time in a covered place with little air circulation could this be spreading bacteria and preventing them from recovering properly?
Should I remove these and try to think of less contained ways that they can feel secure but still allows plenty of air circulating?
Sorry if this seems a silly question but I just want them to get better, enjoy their lives properly and see their cute little piggy personalities come through!
Your thoughts would be really good! Thank you! xoxo

I don't think it would be anything to do with the hidey house because, my piggies are always in them and they are fine, but maybe take a few of the hideys out so you can see what their doing, but keep a few in so they can have some peace and rest. xx

Yeah, maybe take out a few hideaways. I would keep an eye on them, and take them to a vet if they get worse.

Hope they fully recover!

When my boy Artie had a URI I found that plenty of rest did him well, he was kept in a hospital cage (an old zoozone but this worked well as he was only six weeks old) and i had him on fleece instead of hay,I used a spare square of fleece and made it into a hammock so he could rest under it to feel safe and secure, i also left in the cage his teddy to cuddle upto he was removed from his cage buddy so Artie couldn’t pass on his URI and eye infection to Harvey :) I changed his bedding every two days so he had fresh clean bedding to lie on, his URI cleared up within eight days and but i kept him in quarantine a further two days just so he could pull himself round.

I also feed Artie mashed up porridge oats (made them soft in warm water on the hob) once a day to keep his weight up, and kept him hydrated, alongside his mashed up pellets which were soaked overnight and routinely feed every three hours during the day as the baytril put him off food. I'd also suggest sweet corn as this is fattening and can keep their weight up.

I'd also suggest if you’re not already putting in a hot water bottle with warm water wrapped in a towel in the cage too, so they can keep warm whilst recuperating.

Sorry for the mass of text, just thought my experience might help!
Hope they feel better soon, i know it can be horrible watching them deteriate quickly :( If they dont improve by the end of the week i'd take them back to the vets, just to make sure.

Laura xx

Thanks for all the replies! They were given a further four days on the Baytril and I've to go back on Tuesday if there's no improvement. They also got an anti-inflammatory injection to help their lungs. The vet this time was great as she really doted on them and gave them a really thorough check and could hear a bit of whistling on their lungs.
Thanks Laura, I never thought of a hot water bottle! That sounds like a great idea, so I will put one in tonight for them in a corner and drape some fleece over the corner to make them feel safe and hopefully that'll help them.

I study at home and they are in the room I study so I'm able to spend a lot of time with them and think that helps pick up on any changes quickly, so I'll continue keeping a close eye on them!
Thank you everyone!

Awww i'll keep my fingers crossed for them, hopefully they'll pull round in the next few days :) Your vet sounds brilliant, we went to two vets with artie before finding a cay savy vet! Hope the water bottel works for you as it did for artie.

Good luck, get well soon piggies!
