Patch has just come back from the vets minus his manly parts. He's sat in his cuddle cup next to me, the vet sad he might not eat for a few days but he's munching away on the wagg guinea pig crunch and has started eating veggies within 5 minutes of getting back! He seems fine and keeps jumping on me. His parts are enlarged and a bit stuck out, is this normal?
The stitches are tiny and I can hardly see the cut, the vet said they are dissolvable and we are taking him for a check up on Wednesday . He isn't trying to nibble them or even pay any attention to it or acting as though any thing is up he's just eating lots!
It cost 58.76 pounds, they said it would cost 33.08. Why has it nearly doubled? s this because of the check up? on Wednesday and the small packet of powdered food in case he doesn't want to eat (which he does!)

It's good he's eating that's what you want to see & it is normal for there to be swelling :) Post-op checks are usually included in the price. I would ring your vets & ask why the price you were charged wasn't the price you were quoted as they are the only ones who would know :)

Firstly - BE GLAD!

A boy with a good appetite has usually a quick recovery! Some boys get knocked by the GA, and their appetite is off; that's what that powder is for. Keep it in case of emergency.

I would inquire why you were quoted two different prices; my suspicion is that you are paying for meds and check up extra! However, the pre-op quote should have made clear that there would be extra cost involved!

Glad to hear that he is doing well and eating! I'm sure it will heal in no time. :)

Maybe they gave you the wrong price or maybe he had a few painkiller injection's and the ga etc may not have been included in the price. Normally post op checks are free, this is from experince when i worked in the vets a few years ago.
You should have been given a printable sheet that should list all the prices, you can ask for one if you want to know the break down, as my vets always ask if we want one.

:)

He keeps putting his head in his bowl and munching away, he almost looks like he's trying to mount it. He seems fine in himself, I'm amazed he isn't bothering with stitches and eating so much. I'm really really glad he's OK.
Will 4 weeks be long enough before going with the girls?

A pig that did not eat for a "few days" would soon be dead.

I am glad he is eating well and not missing his manly parts too much!

Just keep an eye on him. After a few days they may start to feel itchy, and that will be when he tries to have a go at them. Its no different to humans having stitches. I remember having stitches a few years ago and they itches like crazy after a few days.

I know rabbits are fertile up to 6 weeks after being neutered, can't remember what it is for guinea pigs though.

Glad to hear he's home and doing well.
Definately ask on wednesday when you go for the check up why there was such a difference with the price.

I know how itchy stitches are because I've got 10 currently in my foot after having a bone tumour removed. He seems ok and is snuggled up with his blanket and cuddle cup. :)

Cozmo, it's the same with piggies - it's recommended that newly neutered boars are kept away from sows for 6 weeks post-op.

Same thoughts as AP in regards to the vets saying he may not eat for a few days! I do understand what the vet meant even though the wording was perhaps not great.

I hope Patch's recovery goes well. Dexter remained very "baggy" in the area for a good week, once the inflammation goes down it does all tighten up very well. I do have a photo of the poor boys rear end a few hours after the surgery, I still cringe looking at it - poor boy!

Ouch! Poor you :(

Thanks everyone!
He seems Ok and I keep giving him more veggies and talking to him, he's sat next to me right now. He isn't sat really still and putting his bum in the air like everyone says theirs did after neutering, he's just slouched in his cuddle cup with his fleece blanket over him. :):) Hope he'll be ok
What chance is there is it it'll get infected/abseces? I keep swapping his towels/fleece :), he has passed urine but not pooped yet (he didn't have anything to eat from about 9:30 till 4:30 today, this how long he spent at the vets) When the vet brought him out he climbed onto me and squeaked.

The chance is reduced by the vet using the right suture thread (i.e. not chromic/catgut). After that, it's mostly just 50/50 i.e. he will or he won't!

It may take a few hours for you to get any "output" from his digestive system, poops may be small at first but should get back to normal as he continues eating regularly.

He's sat with me now at 9:50, 5 hours after he came home. He's been munching his hay, grooming himself, snuffling around and eating his pepper carrot and apple (his faves!) He seems very adventurous, even more than before the operation

JUST HAD THE FIRST POOP OUT OF HIM, SMALL BUT ITS A POOP AND HE'S GONE FOR A WEE!

sounds like he's doing really well & enjoying being spoiled

congrats on the poo & the wee :p

Some owners might believe a vet when he or she says a pig may not eat for a few days after an operation. I wonder how many pigs have died because of that piece of information?

I use silk sutures if any of my pigs need minor surgery. There have never been any problems.

From time to time I see pigs where the vet has used resorbable sutures to eliminate the need for the pig to return for suture removal. Sometimes not all of the suture material is resorbed and bits and pieces of the suture material can remain. An infection can develop around the area, that is an avoidable post op. complication.

Whee hope that Patch had a good nights rest and has woken up eating, pooping and weeing :)
Lucky little man is going to love his wives x)

LOl the way he rumble struts when he sees them is amazing, he gets really excitedx)x) (he's in a cage next to them usually)
He has spent the night in the carry cage with fleece on the floor and his cuddle cup at the back with a towel in (so I can swap them when he pee's on them)
There is atleast 15 poops in there and have seen a couple just now:{ There are a few wet patches around where he's peed.

This is what the cage looks like
He's sat next to his bowl munching on his food, he's just finished on his hay and veggies. He looks normal and seems fine.
When can he go back in his cage, I have them on shavings with a thick layer of hay. If a put him back in the cage should I cover up the bed part of his cage with towels/fleece and let him go onto shavings/hay in his own time?
Thanks
(P.S he's doing really well!:):) )

I would cover at least the bed part of his cage with fabrics - his wound will take about three days to knit together enough to let him on the woodchips/hay, but from then on will heal amazingly quickly!

I am so glad that Patch is one of those boys that is sailing through his operation!

Thanks, he really does seem normal and happy. I had the girls out for playtime on the floor and put Patch in his cage down as well so he could see them and talk and rumble away (now he's been neutered he seems even more excited and rumble struts louder and more often!)
Just hope he fully heals up ok

'm glad he's ok too, I couldn't bear it if he didn't make it through surgery, so close after Perky crossed over the rainbow bridge just over 2 wheeks ago.............

Patch is sat next to me in his cuddle cup and looks so funny!
He's got his fleece blanket over him and he's rumble struting around nd the covers are moving!rolleyesrolleyesrolleyesrolleyesrolleyes
He's acting like there's girlies in there
At least he can't leave 'boar juice' everywhere because he can't make anymore........

He will no longer produce sperm but will still produce the fluid that carries the sperm.

Just a4 wheeks left till Patch gets to go with his new friends!
What should it look like down below on Patch, you can just see two faint tiny lines, how do you know if it's infected or there are abseces? He seems normal and isn't bothering with the stittches at all.

It's been 12 days now since Patch lost his 'boar juice producers' and he's doing fine, no sign of any infection or abseces. I'm really glad he's doing well.
