Nut, my all ginger piggy is only 4.5 months old. For a few weeks I thought she was developing a wee double chin until it started growing quickly, by last week it was growing daily. I had a feel and assumed the worst, hard, round and couldn’t get my fingers round the lump. The whole mystery was she was 100% fine in herself, picture of health.
So I took her today along with Coco for company and it turned out to be an abscess! I’ve never been so pleased to be told that. The vet got loads of pus out and I’ve got hibiscrub to wipe daily and try and get more out.
The vet says she’s nice and chunky but not fat- she’s 800g- is that a normal weight for her age? Coco was weighed too, she’s 800g as well.
A very much relieved guinea pig slave!

You would need to flush it 2x a day with saline solution or the hibiscrub that was given to you using a syringe. Does she have an open wound? Did they prescribed her an antibiotic?

No antibiotics because she’s so well otherwise and she didn’t want to upset her gut. It’s not an open wound as such, the hole would be too small to get a syringe in. If it starts filling up again or she seems unwell they will cut it open and clean it all out.

I am suprised the vet has just left it after draining it to be honest without any antibiotics of instructions for keeping it draining.

I’ve to do the draining each day- I’ve to squeeze the antibiotic solution over the area but no internal antibiotics which I’m glad about.

Fingers crossed it heals up quickly x
Thanks, there’s actually nothing to see, the area had all been shaved and there was no sign on the lump to suggest a cut or anything. So weird how she’s remained so healthy- popcorninh, eating loads etc.

Hopefully it won't refill. Oftentimes abscesses need a large opening to be left to drain and be cleaned inside the wound. Fingers crossed!

Yes I’m worried about that- if it does refill the second option would be to under the knife. I’m not sure whether they do a GA or just sedation for that?

So an adult female should be between 700 and 900g- but she’s 800 and only 4.5 months old!?

It depends... sometimes a surface abscess can be drained with just a local, but oftentimes anesthesia is used.

Pigs come in a lot of different sizes. Honestly, only my tiny pigs have been under 900 g. The average and large ones were more than that, even the girls.
