my poor baby boys are going to have a rough few weeks bless them!
They;ve both had an injection as they have lice/mites and cuddles has a weeks worth of antibiotics i have to give him. do i squirt it to any point in his mouth? or just like i would my dog?

so beddings stripped, no more fleece for my two boys yet and they're on paper and hay 8... although i havent taken their cosy cup out yet as they are resting in it.. they hated their jabs bless them, but didnt bite me!

Just hope they get well soon.

As for the white patch on cuddles she things that is from scratching so we have to go back next week (plus my dog! - family outing lol) for another jab each and maybe a flourescent light over the scab to check for fungal.

They arent allowed any veggies incase upsets tummy (although been fine with everything so far?) and that is it..

feel very sorry for them, just want them clean and healthy so i can give them loves!:(

What med's have you been given and how much do you need to give and how often?

Please take the cosey out now and give that and the fleece a hot wash without softner. make up their diet or constant hay and pellets and make sure they are drinking, weigh them daily to monitor for any weight loss.

Did they give you any critical care or anything for if they stop eating? If not it may be worth getting some or mushing up some pellets and syringing this, but only if they stop eating.

Poor piggies. :(
You had got everything perfect for them, atleast they are in your care now!

it's out. i've already boiled fleeces so i'll boil this in min too. they are eating hay and nuggets and drinking, they seem really happy and well just that they actually aren't. I weigh them everyday, and she's recorded their weights. she didnt give me any critical care as they are eating. but i'm back there weds with my dog so any probs i'll speak to her about them too.

the meds is called enrocfloxacin 2.5% oral. o.1ml twice a day

weights:
nipper
day 1 181g
day 2 195g
day 3 199g

cuddles (uri one)
day 1 201g
day 2 208g
day 3 216g

so do you agree no veggies too?

not sure what the med is, but anyway you need to just put tip of syringe in behind front teeth and squirt, do not put the syringe right in the mouth, just the tip just behind the front teeth. you might find it easier to tip them back in a slight "baby cradel" position to give it to them as they have a habit of spitting out. This may or may not effect their hunger, so keep an eye tha they remain eating.

Please do ask if you have anymore questions. xx

ok thanks. what about veggies?

I'm not one to say go against vet advice, and i am a soft touch but i dont think a little lettuce leaf or a few grass cuttings will hurt, but i would wait until they have had a couple of doses of the med's first and keep an eye on their poops, then if all ok then slowly introduce tiny bits of fresh food and keep an eye on them. But i may be wrong, other members may say differently so wait to see what others say and carry on as the vet has told you to. this is jst the way i would do it. x

thanks i'll see how they go, just had his 1st bit of antibiotics bless him he liked it! LOL

do feel bad them being on paper! is it ok for them to eat paper as they do munch it

Only just noticed the weights of them, how old are they? Where did you get them from and are you sure your scales are accurate? At them weights they should still be with their mummy.........

Yes its ok for them to eat the paper.

Enrocfloxacin is baytril, did you get some Probiotics too? This antibiotic is very upsetting for the stomach and a probiotics is a must. What is the baytril fo? Am I correct in reading the babies have Mites and maybe fungal? Is the antibiotic for sores on their skin in case of infection?

Also please be aware that the lamp you refer to will not show all strains of fungal and glow fluorecent.

Veggies, did the vet suggest to stop veggies for a particular reason? Have they had squeezy poops? Veggies are great to deliver vitamin C which in turn helps heel the body. If the veggies are stopping did the vet suggest a vitamin C supplement?

Oh ak, I thought maybe that drug had a laxative affect and maybe thats why veggies were to be withheld.

I wonder if the vet is trying to rule things out- but withholding veggies is not that common unless there is upset tummies/ soft poops.

Probiotic is a must and you can buy some from PAH if you can get any from anywhere else. Or your vet will have some also, bio lapis or fibre plex but they can be a bitmore expensive.

Its good they are still eating and gaining weight. I know in previous threads there has been a suggeston of them being underweight/ younger than the 4 weeks. Could you post pictures of them, from different angles? If they are in proportion and not boney, then I woulndt worry about their weights as they are gaining.
It may well be they should be with mum but regardless they are with you now and theres not much that can be done except do whats best for babies this small. Have you spoke to Suzy, I'm not clued up in nursing very young babies maybe they still need hand fed a little?
Your doing the best you can for them but please do give them a probiotic on top of the antibiotic. Well done for removing all the bedding and boil washing.

Is your hay new? Just if your using the stuff the rescue gave you it might not be very good and have been causing the problem. If you buy hay like oxbow, as a temporary measure your guaranteed not to have mites/lice in it.

Also is antibiotic a common treatment for skin issues? I though invermectin/nizorol was more common? But again I am no exper Ive never had any skin issues with any of my piggies- someone else can advise better.

yes scales are accuarate,, they are 4 weeks and i've rescued them from a so called rescue. i'm not worried about their weights as they are in proportion and the vet said they are just diddy.

their poops are fine but she said to stop the veggies incase they become a bit loose.
the anti biotics is for cuddles URI

I didnt know about pro biotics so shall get tomorrow thank you

they definately have lice as the vet and i saw them, they had an injection for that? they've both got another one next week as well.

my hay is all new also.

I'm going to call suzy tomorrow and have a chat with her. i spoke to the vet about feeding formula or something but she said as they are eating everything fine and pooping ok then to leave them on the nuggets and alfalfa hay

They can't possibly weigh so little at 5 weeks, or if they do you are in trouble. speak to suzy about it,

Ah i see, your vet sounds quite good. Perhaps whatever is in the injection may casue a runny bum. I would stick to what she says a week off veggies will do no harm.
They seem to be thriving with you despite the issues. The main thing is you have them and your taking very good care of them. I'm glad you got new hay- it sounds like youve got it all covered an dif the vet says they are in proportion and not underweight then I'm sure they are. My puppy was always "underweight" and a border terrier expert said she was far far too small. But she was happy and healthy. And she was always just a slow developer. She still is but there is not a thing wrong with her and always grew.
I know this is going to sound really daft, but what if the mum was pregnant in a smokey environment? I know it affects the size of human babies ha ha!
Do we get to see more pictures of the little darlings? I'm just not clued up on weights and babies, suzy will know best what there needs are.

Keep going with the little munchkins they will repay you with lots of cuddles when they feel better :)

I'm just going by the recommendation from this forum that male babies shouldn't be separated from mum until they reach 250g, and we all know this should hopefully be at 3 weeks, so at 5 weeks they are well below that.

I personally think a wee fib has been told and the babies are younger. Given their health, in my opinion the rescue maybe didnt want to pay the vet bills so seperated them younger than need be. If they dont look underweight then that in my opinion is the only logical explanation that they must be younger that what the rescue said they were. But they could also be small babies as well adding to the issue as we dont know when they were seperated and what there diet was.

But I dont want you ,annaleaze, to feel like I am criticising you, as its not your fault the reascue was irresponsible, Ive been there with my Harry and his neutering complication. The important thing is that they are being cared for properly now given the bad circumstances. Which I belive they are.

hi i know you cant all get your head around it but they are actually only 4weeks. 4 weeks ago the mini farm opened and my daughter saw them when they were a week old which was 3 weeks ago lol they were born the day after the farm opened which was 4 weeks ago lol But i dont know if this may have something to do with it, they were both only babies to two seperate mums.. so maybe born early? or unhealthy mummy's? bad genes? i dunno but they are honestly in proportion lol

i'll get some more photos later, they hate me at the moment form their jabs and antibiotics :(

only one is on anti biotics so do i give just that one pro biotics?

(calling suzy tomorow :) )

Oh Anna the poor boys. Thank goodness they are starting treatment now. I am sure they will soon get well and gain weight. Suzy is wonderful and she will be able to help you.

:( poor boys, not a good start to piggy ownership for you either! I'm glad you're doing your best for them, Suzy really knows her stuff with mini pigs so keep in contact with her, well done and we're all here if you need some support!

i've appreciated everyones help right from go! i knew they were going to have problems, just didnt know what so its not a surprise, now i know the problems i can get them sorted and hopefully give them a wonderful life with us :rose

Aw, they are lovely boys x)
They are so lucky to have you and you are doing a fab job caring for them xx>>>
Keep up the great work, it all pays off to see them healthy and repaying you with cuddles ;)

Thought i'd give a little update and add to an existing post rather than start another one ha ha. Both are gaining nice now and their fur is gorgeous! Cuddles is alot chunkier than nipper in size, although their weights are very close now. They're still on nuggets only with pro c, and lots of hay. They're getting bolder by the day! Cuddles is getting more difficult taking his medication but we've not missed a drop so far! What age does dominance start? As i've noticed cuddles is bossy! He sort's nipper out! I was watching earlier and he'd gone to bed, so in went nipper.. I could hear like a chirpin noise? Next thing out comes nipper fast! And cuddles was chatterin! Nipper was lookin at him wiggling his bum and makin a little noise? (i then had to check he was a boy through paranoia lol) and now they are snuggled up together? Ha ha i've put another little plastic house in there in case he gets kicked out again by moody cuddles.. Hope that's ok? Cuddles chews everything too, i weigh him in a plastic dish and he Has to chew it lol he eats paper, chews the bars, tries my fingers! And nipper is complete opposite lol hope all seems pretty normal? Cuddles snuffles seems to have gone too but those scabs are still there, although not getting any worse so that's positive!

Dominance doesnt usually start till about 4 months, sometimes 3. However, they are stressed at the moment with a new home, and both feeling a little under the weather, So two of everything is best, That way they can both have somewhere safe to sleep but be appart. You did the right thing! :)

The nibbling may calm down as he gets older... it may not. :) You just have to be carefull he cant eat anything thats bad for him. lol :)

Little boys suddenly learn that they are male and start to show off, mount and generally be silly boys from a very early age. It's all part of them growing up and they should enjoy it - the rumblestrutting often leads into popcorning as they don't quite know what to do with the sensations they are feeling.

The 'teenage' stage for guinea pigs can be anywhere from 6 weeks for early starters (usually it's around 3-4 months though) right through to 15 months. Months 6-10 are the trickiest as the hormonal surges seem to be at their strongest and this is when the majority of fall outs happen.

Once the boys have the all clear from the vet I would recommend placing an appropriate sized teddy in with them so if they do get a bit frustrated they can take it out on the bear rather than each other.

Suzy x

Is it wrong this statement made me go "awwwwwww". I just love boars. My Harry stilll does this, not as often now, but when he first got together with his wives he used to rumble into a popcorn, it is genuinly like hes a little confused, excited (in a boy girl way:x) and happy all at once! ha ha!

When I got my first 2 boys, I had to learn from the forum that the 'rumble-pop-flick-snort' was pretty common boy stuff! Tea Cake even seems to look down at his boy area as if thinking 'what is going on down there?'
Hope your boys keep mending and you start to enjoy watching them play.
