Phew, just got back from an emergency 'call out' for a piggy with heatstroke.

A friend/former neighbour sent us a panicked message saying her pig was dying and she didn't know what to, and the kids were distraught.

I suspected it might be heatstroke as it was really warm today (35C) and the piggy is dark colour with semi-long, thick hair. I advised her to start cooling him with a wet flannel and me and Dad raced over.

When we got there they said he'd died, I went to see and thankfully he was still hanging on. Spent about an hour cooling him and syringe feeding him. He was a bit wobbly on his feet but he was much perkier and eating some hay when we left.

I said he still needs to see a vet urgently, and I'll send her some info on how to handle it in future if it happens again.

My heart is still racing. I've never dealt with heat stroke before, I've only read about it on here!

So I'd like to say a HUGE thank you to the forum for the great advice - he's not out of the woods yet but hopefully he'll be okay! I'll be praying he's alright.

Well done! Please make sure that he has a vet check tomorrow, especially re. his heart. Best make sure that he has a haircut, too!

Sadly, there is going to be a high number of fatalities of all kinds of pets today, but bunnies, piggies and dogs left in cars are probably getting the brunt of it, being left out on the lawn or in unprotected hutches or too hot upstairs rooms. :(

She said she'd take him tomorrow morning, hopefully she will. There's not a lot I can do to ensure he goes, I can't really go round and take him myself! But I stressed that he needed to go as heatstroke is serious and can cause other problems. I'm just glad that he has hopefully got the opportunity to go, at least,

Well done! Hopefully she will do the right thing and take him to the vet today :)
