I was able to get ivermectin pour on as recommended by someone in a different guineapig forum— I did the first treatment today, is it normal for guinea pig to scratch herself a bit still since it’s only the first treatment? I plan to continue the treatment for the next two weeks and see how it goes.

What ivermectin are you using xeno 450 is the one for adult pigs any weaker strength will not work.
Yes, piggies will still scratch at first as their is cycles of eggs hatching hence the repeated treatments.

Yes you usually need 3 rounds of prescription strength treatment like Xeno 450. Beware of weaker products- they are less effective and could make the problem worse, leaving any mites that are naturally a bit resistant to ivermectin alive to breed and re-infest!
Make sure you use good cage hygiene, after every treatment dose, hot wash any fleeces, throw away any cardboard furniture and hay, and give the cage and any plastic or wooden houses a thorough clean with F10 disinfectant.

I got this one based on reviews, as I’m from the US.
LINK REMOVED BY MODS — I saw that there were reviews from other guinea pig owners who said it worked. I also made sure to dose correctly from a chart. I made sure to wash everything and kept her living area clean. I’m not sure if Xeno 450 is available in US 😰 She does seem to be happier and is eating fine and scratching herself less!

How much did you apply? Because a pipette of xeno 450 contains 450 micrograms. You’d have to administer 0.09ml of what you bought. Did you go by reviews online or did someone recommend it to you?

It’s always best to have piggy seen by a vet. I don’t know if your vets are seeing piggies at all, given the current circumstances. The difficulty with diagnosing yourself is that you could be wrong. In which case home treating could make it worse, and not heal piggy.

I administered around that amount using a 10 ml feeding syringe(I did not feed her it orally), and I’m sure that it didn’t go past the 1 ml mark or ever reach that amount. I read it from the reviews on the product, a couple people said they put three small drops, one behind each ear, and to rub it using ears, and then once on the rump— and then to continue for the next two weeks. Then they said that it worked really well, and their piggies were already recovering by the end of it— because of the situation no vets are opened right now and a stay at home order is issued, but as soon as it lightens up I plan to take her to the vet immediately. I made sure to research thoroughly and didn’t see lice but did notice dandruff and lots of itching— I made sure to put on a humidifier and clean her living space frequently. I also did not notice any fungal symptoms, and looked at other videos about mites and saw how little bits of skin may come off with the fur, and noticed all of the symptoms lined up with mites. I also asked someone else about the symptoms and they provided another forum link about treating mites. Thank you for helping me, she’s perked up a lot more!

Hello. I’m sorry I have to be a bit blunt here. We don’t advocate home treating on this forum.
0.09ml is considerably less than 0.9 and could only really be measured using a 1ml syringe not a 10ml syringe. You say it didn’t get near 1ml. Ŵell 1 ml or 0.9 would be far too much solution to use for your piggy. 0.09 is a tiny amount in a 1ml syringe.

I don’t think anyone on this forum would have given you advice or links to treating mites without a formal diagnosis of mites by a vet. I appreciate that these are difficult times but our forum stance remains the same. Vets are doing telephone and video conferencing and are still open for emergencies in the UK.

I am going to remove your link as we don’t want other folk googling and finding potentially confusing advice about home treatment or products we do not and cannot endorse as appropriate. I hope you understand.

US— that’s okay, I understand, feel free to— I didn’t mean to cause harm.

I realized my mistake in coming to the wrong region based forum, I’m sorry— I’ll go ask for advice that’s more based around where I live. Thank you for all the help, since it might cause confusion, feel free to delete this thread and I’m sorry for the trouble I’ve caused.

The issue isn’t going to a forum that’s not based in US. We actually have quite a lot of members who aren’t in the UK. New Zealand, India, US, Canada etc.

This forum doesn’t support home treatment. Are the vets not available for a phone or video consult? Could you speak to one then email them photos?

Ahh I see. I’m trying to contact a couple, some aren’t answering calls and some put me on hold but I sent a couple of emails to vets online, and I’m waiting for a response. What I meant about region was that I was a bit worried that it’d be harder to give me advice, as I’m not a local, thank you for your help and time. I’m relieved to know that I can still ask questions 😅

No need to apologise - it’s just that we have a firm stance about home treating to ensure we stay on the right side of the law. We do want to help and want what’s best for your piggy, but we can’t advocate home treatments without a formal vet diagnosis and the advice of a vet. I do hope that you can speak to a vet soon.

I just wanted to add that I am also not in the UK, but whenever I have had a question (and trust me I have had MANY over the years) there is always someone here who has been able to give advice.
No matter where you live a lot of the treatments and base medications are actually the same (even when they have different brand names).
This Forum is a wealth of information and well worth being a part of no matter where you live.

keep trying. Hopefully I’d you pester them enough they’ll get back to you. It may be a case of dealing with emergencies. Which vet did you use before lockdown? On guinealynx there’s a list of vets by state. Fingers crossed you get a response back soon.

I am! I go to one that was 30 mins away or so in a different city, because they have a small animals vet there but they’re currently closed. I’ll be contacting emergency vet soon and scheduling a visit. and I’ll continue to email ! thank you so much for your time!

Thank you so much! This has helped me a lot so I really do appreciate it. I always get a little intimidated but this has helped me learn.

Yes, I agree! Thank you! If I can’t get a hold of one online I’ll be scheduling a visit to emergency vet available!
