on hoovering out treacle and keith our bonded boy piggies who have been together about a month now with no problems my daughter found a tooth, so i checked both pigs over neither had any cuts etc keiths teeth are fine but treacles top 2 teeth are gone you can see the top bit of tooth still there in the gum and one looks a little red he is skipping and jumping about fine, eating his pellets and hay no problems and also ate his veg although had a bit of trouble picking up his tomato so we chopped it up a bit
there is no sign of him being under the weather i know they hide their pain well but in my experience a sick or unwell pig will just sit in the corner of the cage fluffed up and not interested in anything but treacle is the opposite
what do you guys think i should do, thinking of a vet check up mon to see if they need to come out or not, if they do would his bottom teeth them need clipping every so often?
i have done all the boys grease glands today and while they were waiting they were grooming each other and they are now sleeping next to each other so i really dont know what caused this injury?

Monitor him and make sure he is eating. Weigh him daily. They should grow back. If he is having problems take him to the vet.

One of the most common reasons for broken teeth (apart from the dietary ones of lack of Vit C or calcium) is bar chewing or popcorning and banging into a hard surface like the side of the cage or wooden house.

You may find that chopping up the veg for a while will help - giving lots of long stalked hay is best as it will keep the back teeth down while the front ones re-grow and the piggy can get them in to his mouth easily.

You may find that his lower teeth may need trimming before the bottom ones are fully back to normal as they have nothing to wear against and overgrow.

One of my sows recently broke off half of one top incisor & sheared the opposite bottom incisior off at the gum. I took her to the vets, he burred her intact upper incisor to the same length as her broken one & put her on baytril because infection can set in when the pulp is exposed (the tooth sheared off at the gum.
He didn't think she'd done it fighting & said most pigs do this when bar biting or biting on something & are spooked. Two weeks on & her bottom tooth is re-growing.
With your boy not having any top incisors it may be he will need his bottom ones burring (not clipping) to prevent over-growth until his top ones re-grow. :)

thanks everyone, treacles teeth are starting to grow back nicely, have been weighing him and he hasnt lost any weight and it doesnt seem to bother him at all, his bottom teeth do look kind of long bt will keep checking to be sure that they are staring to wear down as his top ones are small stmps now so they can grind together
