Just how bad is Iceberg lettuce for guineas?

The other day I wanted to treat our guineas, so I picked up some "Dolce Verde" lettuce from Tesco, which seemed to be a fancier version of Romaine lettuce. Yesterday though my partner called me at work to tell me that the guineas were making strange noises, like their stomachs were upset. After doing a bit more research online I discovered that Dolce Verde is actually a GE food, a cross between a Romaine lettuce and an Iceberg lettuce.

I'm a little miffed about Tesco not telling exactly what was in the package, but right now I'm more concerned about the guineas. They seemed to be doing ok by the evening, but I just want to check if there's any other warning signs I should be looking out for before taking them down to the vets.

How much did you give them? If you gave them one leaf to split, the will just have the runs for a day. Just give them kibble and hay until it clears up. But you said it was a mix between Romain and iceberg. I would imagine the runs wouldn't be to bad. Unless it is really bad I wouldn't take them to the vet. Try googling "can guinea pigs eat dolce verde"

Lettuce is ok in small amounts and all piggies are different. I give iceberg in very small amounts every now and then. My lots very rarely get any type of lettuce as there very little nutritional value in it, so its simply an odd treat.

I don't think Iceberg is bad as such, it's just not good if you get what I mean. It has no nutritional value and can give them diarrhoea if they eat too much. They should be fine in a couple of days, but just keep an eye on them.

It sounds like they've got upset tummies...... i'd be contacting a vet

Also welcome to the forum to you, your partner and your piggies :)

Thanks very much for the quick replies, Rosie, Patch, Lulu and Ginger certainly appreciate it (as well as me and my partner of course). Since they've had no other problems we're going to just keep an eye on them for now, but definitely not giving them any more of this particular lettuce. And thanks for the welcome :).

though I was always told it was full of chemicals, hence why I don't feed it and I don't give lettuce anyway
