So after putting the boys back in their cage earlier I thought I'd leave them in peace for the night and so didn't go to check on them until I went to bed. Well - I came upstairs to find I'd accidently left the cage doors open! :yikes::yikes::yikes: I'd forgotten I'd gone in through the bottom to get Frodo out and not closed it behind me afterwards ; because of the layout I hadn't noticed when I put them back either. I had such a panic when I realised what I'd done as the room is in no way piggy proof at the minute - I dread to think what could have happened. Thankfully, they were both in the cage and are now quite happily munching on some late night veg and fresh hay! It looks as if there was some exploration outwith the cage (fitch strewn over the floor - but that could have been me when I went there earlier) but they clearly didn't go far as there was a bag of veg on floor that has no signs of having been tampered with! For once I am extremely grateful my boys are not adventurous little beings and prefer the safety of their own cage!

The weirdest bit is I had a flash of 'should I check on them' earlier, worried that they might somehow have gotten out their cage but I reassured myself that it was a ridiculous thought as the sides were on the cage and they can't climb - how could they possibly get out?!

Even though I can tell no harm came from this I still feel like such a bad piggy owner as I know it could've ended much worse. I can safely say though - I will not be making that mistake again. Ever!

My boys free range in our lounge but get locked up when we are out or at night time. I locked them away so I could go out the other day, luckily didn't go straightaway because just before I did leave I discovered that barney was still out and running around - oops!

Don't worry I usually leave the doors open for a bit for example if I'm going to do their food or if I have one of them out and I leave the other in as I know they won't climb out. I just have to worry about my hamster's cage. One time I left it open when I went to bed luckily I quickly checked if I shut it just before I went to sleep and somehow he didn't decide to walk out (usually does!)

Hey come on, we all make mistakes. Please stop feeling so bad. You are a wonderful mum and this has not changed that.

Know how you feel only my issue was with my chinchilla girl Poppy!
Has been quite ill with dental issues in last couple of months and had been syringe feeding. With them being nocturnal this was late night and was half asleep! Was drifting off and suddenly felt something jump on my bed, yes my naughty chin!
Hadn't even left door wide open but they can open them as such clever, mischievous little beggars!

Sorry, know not pigs but like piggyfan said, we all make mistakes sometimes with our babies!

Glad to know their ok :) I've done way worse so don't worry (left a big umbrella behind the hutch and it blew the whole thing over and they were wandering round my backyard!) Where do you keep the cage?

i once left Maple out because she hadn't gone in with the others. Went in... Came out later and found her underneath the pot! She was putrid! It was pure luck i checked again...

The OH left Alan the hamster's door open once, he climbed down onto the floor and collected all of the pigs' food (they were free range at the time) and made a nest with it behind the sofa. Then another time the OH did it again with Daisy the hamster who greeted us at the bedroom door in the morning. Yes you can guess what I nag him about now.
Glad your boys are ok.

A few years ago we left Peanut the hamster out in his ball all night as each one of us had assumed the other had put him away :( Thankfully he was fine the next morning, asleep in it under the chair.

I once forgot to close Holly hamsters cage properly and she escaped during the night. I was frantic with worry as we have two cats but thankfully she didn't make it in to the kitchen where they sleep. I found her asleep in a blanket that was rolled up on the back of the settee.

Another time one of our rats escaped from a cage that wasn't closed properly. Thankfully we didn't have cats then and we found him asleep in the settee.

My girls are so adventurous its not safe anymore as the try out the landing !
