Just need some moral support. Op booked

Thank you, I appreciate your time to post massively. That goes to everyone on here. I get a little impatient sometimes and very disheartened when I see her have a little episode of squinting. I just need to tell myself what the issue is and it can be sorted. The eye isn’t any worse, if anything it’s better than it has ever been since I got her.

I did read something about them potentially being able to correct it themselves or it improving in time, but I’m guessing she’s too old now? Still only 4 months. It’s definitely improved as to when she was doing it constantly to around a month ago?…

By now she is unfortunately too old for a self-correction.

But the op is in the same area as stitching up overhanging lids in older humans; only that local anaesthesia is not possible in animals for obvious reasons.

I hope that this gives you a better perspective and handle on your anxiety? ;)

I wish you well whatever decision you make. Were you also after advice on whether to use the eye specialist vet or the guinea pig specialist vet?

Thank you Wiebke. Hopefully get something sorted on Thursday when I speak to my vets.

Yes @CTWC. The eye specialist is an eye specialist, but doesn’t know much about Guniea pigs but said the procedure is more less the same thing for entropion. My actual vets said they can do it no problem and has sedated and done anaesthetic etc on my
previous Guniea pigs for other reasons

Guinea pig eyes are the same as in other species so it comes down to which vet you feel you trust more and are happier with - the eye specialist with more practice in eye corrections or the vet who has more guinea pig operating experience and you have more personal positive experience with.

We cannot make those decisions for you. They can only be made by the owner themselves. It is your personal privilege as much as it is your legal burden.

Thank you :)… I’m leaning more towards my actual vet who knows a bit more about Guniea pigs to be fair and they have been very good to me. She’s had them all her life since growing up too.

What actually is the difference between remend and lubricants? Remend states it lubricates the eye as well as promotes healing.

This vet appointment Thursday can’t come
Soon enough. I’m not sure if I’m overthinking here or if this would be a very rare case but can they get ovarian cysts at 5 months old? She doesn’t like being picked up or touched in that area. Would she be squinting both eyes if in pain? I may ask her to do an X-ray while she’s under anyway for some clarification or ultrasound? I’ll get her to have a feel Thursday if she stays still!

Hi all, booked in for Wednesday! I hope she will be OK. I have spoken to my usual vet and she knew the specialist I saw as she has referred other animals to him for various surgery’s. She said she would do it, but thinks it would be best for him to as he’s the specialist and has much higher end equipment and tools for the job at hand.

I asked him about the anaesthetic approach and his nurse who has a lot more experience with it said they prefer it over gas because it’s less stressful and the gas can be very potent and a chance of them
Holding breath etc or something so they want to keep her as stress free as possible and to make an efficient but swift procedure

Fingers crossed for Wednesday and hopefully the end of your girl's eye problems.

I’m quite worried, I need your view on this. When she is out and about the eye is good and then when she rests she squints a lot in that one eye, then closes then squints then closes. They shouldn’t squint at all really when resting right? And that was what his view was. Any squinting at all throughout the day justifies the procedure he said, he said he’s gonna re check her beforehand ( the eye) and if he feels it’s not needed he will tell me. Do you think because it’s a mild case that’s why?

I don’t think you should worry about the how often and when she is squinting - your vet is dealing with the issue and will know what to do. They will guide you on everything. You just need to focus on looking after her

Best wishes for Wednesday

Great news!

Please brace for that the poos may become a little funny for a while tomorrow, reflecting her sedation. See the gut as one big conveyor belt so what has gone into the body today will come out at the other end a day or two later.

What you see today are poos from food she has eaten before the procedure but it is a very good sign that she is eating and pooing and not looking very dazed. So you need not worry.
I am just trying to prevent the next possible panic for you.

Thank you! My main worry is when she grooms etc and the stitch but I will keep close eyes on it, but I don’t want to fuss her too much. It looks very sore at the moment and swollen and I have a re check next week in a weeks time.

I may need to clarify the metacam dose with them. It seems a little low

Hi all,

The lid looks so swollen and red. I’m hoping this is normal? Gonna ring him tomorrow and ask him to make sure

The swelling should start coming down in about 3-4 days when the healing process is fully getting underway; that usually takes at least a couple of days before it really starts. Unfortunately, you will have to be patient let nature do its work in its own time. Even with the much faster metabolism that piggies have compared to humans.

Please also accept that the procedure is a very minor one; it is not like cutting deep into the body so the pain is comparatively lower. Also check whether you have been given cat (0.5 mg/ml) or dog strength metacam (1.5 mg/ml). Dog metacam is three times stronger than officially licensed cat metacam and takes 3 times less volume. ;)

Hi

Yes, that is normal. Please read my posts above from yesterday evening where I told you that it takes at least to full days before the healing process sets in properly and that you have to give your piggy 3-4 days for the eye to swell down.

Piggies have a faster metabolism but it is not that fast that they come home from a procedure totally healed up. This process happens at home and it takes a little while even though it is still much faster than in humans.

Sorry, that post you sent I saw after I’d sent the initial one in terms of time, thank you though :)

Just try to not to panic. Everything seems to have gone well so far but you cannot jump straight to the outcome. You have to give the body its own time to do the healing up process. Try to tell yourself that you are on course and try not to hover because you see the less progress the more often you look. ;)

MAJOR MAJOR PROBLEM. I have rang the emergency vets to see what they can do but she has obviously groomed or itched the area and a bit of her eyelid is coming away/torn. They are trying to contact the specialist to see what they can do.

I have her in a carrier with hay on my bed next to me. I’m guessing this is what I can do for now? I have attached photos. The green is dye from a test but as you can see the eyelid is coming away. I’m starting to wonder if this is a horror surgery he has done?!

I am so so scared I’m gonna be sick

I'm not saying it's the same but our darling boy Cookie had to have eye surgery and two days after I was met with a similar looking situation I can't fully recall the name but it was fine and the vet said it was the skin basically crystallizing and was part of the healing process but to look at aa and average person it was terrifying but she was right it was fine.

I'm obviously in no way saying don't see your vet I'm just hoping it may offer some reassurance 💐
