mites, fleas etc season is upon us. Noticed they were all scratching so took not chances, got the Beaphar out. Not having a repeat of last year!

I have to admit that I've never treated my guinea pigs for any kind of parasite (except when they got mange, from buying a pet shop pig). Can they catch fleas and mites from dogs and cats and rabbits? I thought they wouldn't be transmissable to different species and can't think of any other way they'd catch something, except from a new pig brought in?

Parasites such as lice and mites are often found in the hay and bedding, and on the grass if the pigs are allowed to graze on the lawn outdoors. It's also proposed that mite eggs can lay dormant in the hair/skin and hatch/become active in times of immuno-suppresion (e.g. stress, pregnancy, illness).

'Tis fungal season too. In fact, it's skin problem season full stop. I knew there was a downside to warmer weather!

I admit to bathing mine for both parasite and anti fungal shampoos two weeks apart as a preventative measure, although there was a chance they could have caught lice luckily they hadn't! :))

I just think being vigilant keeps it undercontrol. But my piggies love to bury themselves in the hay now, so I have to be careful LOL x
