Just What Makes A Nice Piece Of Hay?

I bought some nice hay for Ginny a while ago as we ran out of his normal hay (Tesco, branch we get it from is a bit more yellow than green and not incredibly soft either). Nibbled at it a bit but pointed his nose up at it until we got the Tesco hay in which he dived into it

Godfrey here...*munch* as a certified *munch munch* hay expert, I can assure you *munchMUNCHmunch* that what makes the perfect piece of hay is it either has to be:
1. At the very top of the hay rack, so you have to lean up and pull rather than just eating from the hay pile.
2. It could also be in another piggy's mouth, therefore it is delicious and must be stolen ASAP.

Stolen hay is the best in our house apparently:))

I can't figure my piggies out. The hay that's good enough for them to poop on looks the same (before they spill the beans) as the hay they find good enough to eat.

Mine have a mixture of two hays the alfalfa king and meadow hay and I swear each time I empty the try different bits have been eaten ! Although I'm 98% sure all the seed heads go .. funny that ;)

I have a couple of bags of the Nature's Own 5 a day hay. So green and soft, it's amazing to feel never mind anything else.

They...don't care. I mean they are eating it, but I can tell they're really not impressed. The last couple of bags of Burgess I've had have been overly crunchy and far more yellow than I'd like, but I guarantee if I gave it to them they'd throw a party.

I buy meadow hay from a local pet shop it's very green and soft. I have been concerned my newbies aren't eating much hay so I bought a bag from a well known local chain store just to try it. It's brown dusty and looks horrible, the newbies are eating it by the mound. Glad to say Spike and Peanut turned their noses up and refused to eat it. I'm hoping by mixing a bit of it in with the better hay I can wean Willow and Bracken off the brown stuff I really don't want to buy it again.
I love watching Spike and Peanut in their hay box scratching around for a good bit of hay, Spike in particular looks like a chicken! :))

I have never seen a piggy that didn't like the seed heads...I'm pretty sure they secretly think we're giving them drugs or something, they go mad for them.

Seed heads here :-) either that or the 10% left in the rack after pulling the other (not so tasty) 90% through and spreading it everywhere! Got to love them

They all seem to have different tastes don't they? Sometimes mine wanted new hay, because they ate all the "good" hay and only the "bad" hay is left. Looks pretty much the same to me! :D

Mistletoe and Jingle like hay that i have just put into their cage.

The hay from the same bag that i put in a couple of hours ago is nowhere near edible ...

I'm incredibly glad to see it's not just my two! The amount of hay that gets wasted and put in the bin because they've decided to pull it out of the rack and poo on it is a pain.

Hay is best when it belongs to somebody else! :))

My girls are always suspicious over new hay so I don't like to change too much, they've had a few different types now so I'm hoping that has opened the door to a few different varieties! As long as it's Timothy Hay they're pretty happy!
