My name is Nicole. Poppy is my 1 year and 8 month old guinea pig. About 6 months ago I noticed a small 1cm lump on her tummy. I took her to the vets only to be told it was relatively harmless for the time being, and to bring her back if it got any bigger.

Over the next couple of months, I noticed her lump had got a lot bigger, 3cms, and she had also developed another small 0.5cm lump on her side, and also a very small lump on her ear.

I took her back to the vet and was told the lumps would need to be tested which would cost £50 an they could be cancerous or tumours. Or she could go ahead and have an operation to have all 3 lumps removed which would cost in excess of £120.

I am asking for any help what so ever to raise the money for her operation. I am currently on job seekers allowance, looking for work, so am finding it difficult to raise the money on my own. I am not asking for mega money, just the odd £2 or £5 if you want to help. It will all add up! You can donate via my PayPal at [email protected], or if you want to send a cheque, or give money another way, e-mail me at the same address and I can send you the relevant details.

Thanks so much in advance for any help I receive.

Hi Nicole and Poppy welcome to the forum :)
I'm sorry to hear about Poppy, i do hope you can raise the money for her much needed operation!
Whee would like to send some healing wheeeeeeeeks and little loves from us all XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
I wonder if you could speak to your vets and ask if you could pay off? I"m not sure if the RSPCA or any rescues can offer support maybe?
Perhaps also speak to your local shops and put up posters..... good luck!
Please update us and let us know how your little girl goes,

Glynis, Velvet and Onyx x

If you are on benefits (council tax benefit) then you qualify for PDSA assistance. Also contact your local RSPCA clinic and Blue Cross.

There is a strong feeling among many members of this forum that if you cannot afford the vet you should not get the pet. We all take responsibility for our pets and make provisions to provide their health care.

I don't expect you to return to this topic as your are posting this everywhere over the internet. Quite honestly how do we know that this is not another scam - you may be quite genuine but we don't know you as you only joined to post asking for money.

Rather than giving you the money please give the vet's details so that anyone who feels happy to donate to a total stranger asking for their money, can send it direct to the vet.

What happens if you get more money than you need for the operation?

I do hope that your piggy will be ok and that you manage to raise the funds but as Suzy has suggested, could you not give your vets address so that anyone who wishes to donate could do so via your vet? I would be quite happy to donate a little that way but not in to someone's PayPal account who I don't know. Sorry.

Thank you for your answers, and I totally understand what you have all said. If I get more money than I need I will donate it to a guinea pig rescue centre. That was my intention. I cannot get help from PDSA as I am not on council tax only job seekers. Also when I bought my pigs I had a job which I was let go from a few months later as the company lost their contract and let everyone go. I was just trying to post as many places as possible to get money together for her. I didnt mean to upset anyone.

you haven't upset anyone, people are just concerned :)
could you post the link to your vets? x

i dont mean to offend however i find your request for us to send you cash very suspicious and feel this may be a scam as if you are on job seekers allowance you can take your pig to the pdsa vet for free and treatment will not cost you a penny.. I'm sorry but i shall not be sending any of my hard earned cash your way, if this is a truthful request and you sincerely didnt know of the pdsa then i apologise and hope your piggy gets well soon

my sister has job seekers allowance and lives with my parents who both work and so do not get council tax benefits. My sister took her dog to the pdsa as he had a fungal infection in his pads , they saw and treat her dog so i think you have been misinformed.

I am aware of the PDSA scheme but they will only help if you are on housing benefits or coucil tax which i am on neither, only JSA.

I honestly did not realise how much upset my post would cause, I am just worried I cannot get her help. I really appreciate now how it looks suspicious. That didnt even cross my mind when I posted.

would i just take her to my nearest vet and let them take a look? or would i need to call them?

I suggest you call them and explain your situation as I told you on yahoo answers as well.

My only concern is that while you're spending all this time raising money, the pig isn't getting any better. In my opinion, as you say there's a chance it is cancerous, waiting around could possibly cost your piggie her life. I don't mean to sound harsh, but ask your vet if it's okay to pay in installments, check out the PDSA or ask a family member for a loan as many people have suggested, rather than wasting time.

Hope she gets better soon x

Hello and welcome to TGPF.

At the moment I think the most important thing you can do for your piggy is to find a cavy savvy vet who can take a look at the lump. Most practices these days are aware that many folks are struggling to make ends meet and will set up payment plans so that you can spread the cost of the treatment.

As regards raising funds, most of us end up doing boot sales and the like to sell on items we no longer need to raise money for our animals. Ebay is another option as are ads in the local paper so prehaps this is something you could consider doing to raise funds for the treatment.

I am sorry to sound harsh, but I do not think it is acceptable to come onto a new forum (or FB) to ask members to help raise money for your piggy. If you really can't afford the treatment and can't get help from the PDSA or similar than perhaps you should consider signing over your piggy to the vet so that he/she can get the treatment they require.

I did not mean to upset anyone with my post. I understand some of you are wary and I did not think when I posted this I just wanted help for Poppy.

It is easier to close this thread. I've tried to contact the moderators without any success - please can someone close this thread, thanks.

Shepherds Vet

Hello

Before I moved to Weston super mare I lived in Bridgend and my vets was Shepherds! Lovely and friendly!

When my parents would go on holiday I could take my dog for treatment and wouldnt have to pay until my parents got back as we had arranged with them before the holiday.

As they are reasonable, I would contact them and see if they can help you with a payment plan.. I'm sure if you are already on their books they will be willing to help in some way.

Hope this helps!!
