My poor little man has had such a rough month, he's been having teeth problems for a while and after seeing specialist cavy vets and rodentologists it now looks as though all those problems were due to an abcess in his jaw bone.

He's having an x-ray tomorrow and I'm so worried he won't survive the anesthetic because he's lost so much weight, I can't see how his little body will take it.

Has anyone else been in this situation? I just want to know what to expect.

Do they need to use a GA for an Xray... I'm pretty sure AP is always saying how this is NOT needed and you can Xray without...

Don't quote me... I maybe wrong.

Good luck Harry! xx

try & get of the GA not needed for a xray poor Harry sending good vibes his way xx

Thanks for the good vibes, lets hope they work!
I really don't know what to do about the GA, I'm scared to death of them but she said he would definitely need one (either for the x-ray or the op, I can't remember now, my head was all over the place) but she's taking him to a more guinea pig savvy vet for a second opinion so I spose I'll just have to wait and see.

I hate the thought of him being with someone he doesn't know either, I know it's for his own good but when the vet was was talking tonight he kept chuddering at the sound of her voice and running towards me.

hope the other vet is better & knows what their doing

i know the feeling of trusting a vet :( if your not happy ask for someone else you know your baby they dont & you do need to trust them

fingers crossed all goes well tomorrow xx

Correct, no general anaesthetic is needed. Someone has actually read one of my posts!
Operation?
Do not let him be operated on without a 3rd or 4th opinion.

Good luck for your guinea. Hope he's okay whatever way hey do the xray / treatment.

Who are you kidding, you know we're all your groupies :(|)

Good luck and fingers crossed for Harry.

BIG HUG for you and fingers crossed for your poorly boy!

Thanks :)

I've just taken him in and she reckons he'll be operated on at about 4pm (I had to take him in this early as it's the vet whos taking him to the more guinea pig orientated surgery). When I went in she said the guinea pig vet wasn't going to be around but would come straightaway if she needed help.

This is now my fourth opinion :( I had a horrible experience at a different vets with my first pig who died soon after, so now I'm extra careful but it never seems enough. My husband has taken the car for the weekend so I can't get to the specialist till Monday as it's 2 hours away and I don't think Harry could've waited that long.

On the flip side of the anesthetic, even though I'm TERRIFIED he's not going to survive it, I think I would rather him be asleep if they're going to be digging around in his face. If it was a one off it wouldn't be so bad but he's been though so much recently I don't want him to be towel wrapped and scared out of his wits with yet another stranger.

Just want the day to hurry up so I can get him home!

I can only imagine how awful you feel right now, I have fingers and paws double crossed for the wee man :)

thinking of you boht - I hate when our two have to go to the vet :(

have got fingers crossed for you and MO & Jules wish you luck and have their paws crossed :)

i know just how you feel :( hopefully time will fly & you'll have Harry home with you in no time xx

It's such a tug to leave them with people they don't know, but hopefully they'll get him back on the right track with his health and you'll be reunited in a couple of days. Fingers crossed for Harry. xx

What exactly is the vet going to do to him? If it is just draining an abscess that is relatively straightforward, I have drained two abscesses this morning. Again, no GA is needed.
Any exploratory surgery, asd such, under GA does carry increased risks, not only from the GA but also from surgical complications, eg spreading the infection.
Dental/jaw abscesses are notoriously difficult to treat and/or cure.
In most cases, if simple treatment does not work, the better option is to manage the condition rather than attempting a drastic procedure.

Apologies for spelling mistake, the edit facility timed out before I could make a correction.

Well he made it through surgery - PHEW!

His lower jaw is really deformed and twisted though so as alcesterpigs said, I think its going to be a case of managing his condition rather than trying to cure it. The abcsess was deep within his jaw apparently, I think thats why he had to be put under GA although I'm not definite. He's staying with the vet overnight as she wants to keep a eye on him so I'm picking him up first thing in the morning. Can't wait! She want's to see him again on Monday and if he's showing no improvement by then she's going to work alongside another exotic vet to make sure he's getting the best treatment. I'm just really grateful shes taken him so seriously and tried her best to get extra help for him.

I just need to get his weight up now :)

Glad he made it through surgery and i hope you find ways and means to manage his condition!

When it is appropriate can you post the details of what he has had done?

So glad he has made it through. I hope you can end up managing it and its really good to be with a vet that is willing to research and get outside help.

I've just picked him up and he looks so much happier :(|) he's even eating out of the dried food bowl! (with a lot of distorted facial expressions bless him). I've been so stessed by all this for the last month, especially the weight loss I feel like crying with relief.

When it is appropriate can you post the details of what he has had done?

He's had the abcsess drained and packed with an anti-biotic tablet, his jaw x-rayed and his teeth trimmed (or filed, I can't remember now). It may be a dislocated jaw in which case she's refering him to a dental vet who, from what I can gather, only deals with rodent's teeth.

I'm syringe feeding him critcal care very hour to try to build him up in case it is a dislocated jaw as he'll definitely need a GA to sort that out.

I've been to hell and back trying to find a decent vet who's willing to make the effort so if anyone wants the name of this one I'm more than happy to pass it on.
