I am getting gps in the autumn and am wondering where to keep them in their cage...... I have cleared out our cupboard under the stairs and when I take the door off it gives enough light( but obviously not so much), they would also need to go onto the floor....... I then thought that perhaps the cage could go in the kitchen/diner and as we could put the cage onto upturned boxes they would be off the floor......
Just wondering whether anyone else has them in the kitchen as I am not so sure how hygenic it can be.... ? 98)

Thanks for that......I was under the impression it would be too cold for them outside in a shed or garage........but it's def food for thought O0

I know someone on here has piggies in their kitchen - I don't see any problem with it personally, if this was my house and I had room I'd certainly have them in the kitchen if there was no where better ;)

I also think that the kitchen is much better than the shed/garage, they will get more attention in the kitchen. If you decide not to go with this, it's a good idea to have heating in the shed/garage in the winter...also, if you have a car in the garage they can't go in there.

Thanks Jane..... O0 I do feel the same as you...I suppose if I clean them out as often as I can there hopefully wont be such a smell :)

Yep I think if you clean them out regularly and use a nice absorbant bedding it wont smell and they will get lots of attention :)

Mine currently live in a shed and i have 2 outside hutches which I'm currently using, but i have on occassion had them in the kitchen, personally i wasnt keen on them being there mainly because there wasnt much room, but it was nice in a sense that they soon got used to being around you

I would keep them indoors if you are able to....ours live in our living room. I love the fact we are around them most evenings so they are very used to us. They will get used to you quicker as well, if you are always stopping by their cage to say hello as you walk past. We eat our dinner in the living room and I don't find the piggies any sort of hygeine problem. Ours are floor level, they used to be on a chest of drawers but we had to take that away so now they are floor level. I was a bit worried about that at first as didn't want them to think we were giants and get scared, but they don't seem to be bothered about it :)

Thanks emilyJ O0
that is very reassuring.....as it happens the lady who runs the rescus is very kindly doing a home check so that we can discuss this further :)

I keep my piggies in my kitchen in pens. They are part of the family and I have no problem with hygiene because I keep them clean so they do not smell ( well maybe first thing in the morning there is a slight pong, especially from the boys !) but I can live with that.

Mine live outside all year round and there fine. The kitch the landing are good places for guineas.

I have 5 girls living in our kitchen. I don't think visitors think it's hygenic but you've just got to be sensible with cleaning. I clean mine out about every 3 days. Sometimes there is a bit of a smell - you need something on the floor that you can wipe with animal disinfectant on a cloth, like vinyl. I've noticed that is better to remove any smell than just cleaning out. To be honest I worry more about any dust or tiny particles of hay and shredded paper than anything else. Mine are down one end of the kitchen so they're not near any worktops. It is really great being able to see them so much - just be prepared for loads of squeaking every time you open the fridge or cut veggies!

I think keeping them in the kitchen is fine as long as they are clean O0

I bet they would love to live in the kitchen :smitten: Near the magic cold box with all the goodies :D . And when your chopping veg you won't be able resist giving them some ;D They'll squeak nonstop til they get what they want xx

Thanks everyone for your replies... :smitten: it's great to hear your stories..... I really value your comments O0

I have 3 of my piggies in the kitchen. I have had piggies in there for as long as I have lived in this house and they have never been any trouble at all apart from excessive squeaking when I open the fridge!

Does anyone who keeps their pigs in the kitchen have a washing machine in there as well? Our is INCREDIBLY noisy and I worry it will be harsh on their ears. Ironically the kitchen is the one plase we have a bit of spare room!

The washing machine is in my kitchen and the pigs don't pay a blind bit of notice to it! They ignore the vacuum too which I think is incredibly noisy. I think once they are used to a sound it doesn't worry them at all.

mine do very well in the garage. My girls will be 5 years old next month so it hasnt dont them any harm. Lots of people who keep piggies are surpise how friendly mine are. More friendier then indoor ones i have been told more the once. My personally opinion is they should be kept outside. Thats where they orginially were.

I have 4 of mine in the kitchen, and no, they dont seem to notice anything expect the fridge opening ;D I love having them all inside! :smitten:

I kept some pigs in my kitchen once for quarantine purposes and because one of them was in pig. They were the friendliest pigs I've ever known and the babies thrived simply because it was all the knew and everyone who came round wanted a cuddle ;D

see....things like that I dont know what to think....my piggies have never been ill and have always lived in the kitchen....when I was little they lived in the kitchen and gloober lived to 4 and maxi to 6, so I think you can be overcautious?

What if you burn something though like I often do, the smoke wouldn't be very nice, also you could drop something like a botle of olive oil or spill something on them.. I have dropped glass on my kitchen floor which has shattered and gone everywhere. Maybe I am just too clumsy to have animals in the kitchen!

Well i am not prepared to risk it,If i had them in the kitchen and something did happen it would be my fault and i couldnt live with that.
So the animals are away from the kitchen so the risk isnt there ;)

Ohhh gawd, I'm all worried now...

Our house is quite old...the kitchen used to be seperate from the main house...so for some reason the people that brought it made a corridor type thing from the dining room to the kitchen, about 6-7 ft long....they are in the corridor area just before the main kitchen...but its kinda open plan(if you know what i mean)....i mean...theres no door....so I guess fumes etc could still get to them....

Do you think I should move them? :-\

thanks for all of your replies O0 my kitchen is an open plan kitchen diner and the gps will be at the back of this. well away from dodgy smells and kitchen danger....we always have our windows open and the door to allow in lots of lovely fresh air( but its not too draughty) ;) They should be okay I think O0

Yes,I agree. My first 2 pigs were dumped on us and I knew nothing about gpss,so I kept them for a few days in the conservatory, which I soon realised was too cold for them(it was late October we brought them into are(luckily large) kitchen and rigged up a pen.As our piggy family grew(rescues, not breeding) they took over the room.I now have pens all over the floor.Yes of course there is danger from something being dropped on them or smoke etc.,but I can honestly say that we have never had any accidents. We are aware of the pigs all the time when we are in the kitchen and are extra careful. If I have to lift a hot saucepan of the cooker for instance,I make sure the pigs in that side of the room are shut in their sleeping box.Glass etc we pick up carefully with both hands to prevent dropping it.I am pretty good at not burning stuff because I stay around when I am cooking, and if the phone or doorbell goes I turn the cooker off.Must admit that I do not like cooking much anyway and tend these days to bung stuff in the microwave, and we eat a lot of salad.
After a while looking out for the pigs becomes second nature, and in any case the pigs are not daft and they seem to keep out of the way when I am working in the kitchen anyway. They seem to know when I am getting our meals or getting theirs!.,when I start chopping veg for them there is a mad stampede.
Having to be extra alert and careful is to me a very small price to pay for the pleasure I get from my pigs.

The thing I do worry about most of all, is ive started using bleach based cleaners again, and the cages are on the floor rather than being on stands....although we move them when the floors wet, the cages get put back onto the beached surface when its dry...is this harming them?

I have a room our elderly dog sleeps in, as hes not very well that I keep my sows in...I could put the 4 in here, but they are boys and the room is quite small, so I worry about them fighting if they smell a girl etc? Is it a better option to put them in there?

I used to keep these boys in the utility room(which is an old pastry kitchen), but a sheepdog we were fostering, Merlin started literally eating his way through the wall (I think it was because of the salt?) and so I obviously dont want to keep cages along that wall ::) ;D
