Keeping Guinea Pig In Your Room?

I'm trying to convince my mum to let me have the guinea pigs in my room. I was wondering if they make a lot of nosie? Would it be healthy for the guinea pigs?

I used to have 2 pigs in my bedroom because they were tiny and it was winter and I didn't want them to be outdoors - and I have to say they drove me mad! It's amazing how much noise a water bottle ball bearing can make in the middle of the night! But I know others on the forum have their pigs in their room with no problem - so maybe I'm just intolerant! I have mine indoors but in a different room so that I can shut the door.#

I have mine in my livingroom but am in a flat so right next to them and it doesnt bother me at all. They were in my room when we first brought them home and the first night drove me crazy but it never bothered us after that, you get used to it very quickly. If i was you i'd have them in my room. its lovely to see their little faces first thing in the morning. xx
 
i have 4 in my room and i could never have them anywhere else!

i think they have become so sociable from being in there, and you get to see them and interact with them much more than if they were outside. as long as you keep the clean they dont smell. my friends say they love the smell of y room cos it smells of fresh hay

you get used to them making noise at night. i am a very very light sleeper and i got used to it.

plus its funny if you go to bed and you can hear them popcorning! ;D
 
I like how they seem to waiting for you waking up. Two of my girls are always at the bars as soon as they here me up for their veg. And i have a 2yrs old and a screaming 5 month old and they dont bother at all, love getting picked up and seeing people. I would keep them in your room. xx
 
I have 5 in my room. Some nights they keep me awake because they take a mad half hour and run round the cage but it doesn't bother me too much. I like them being in a room and I couldn't keep an animal outside. Sometimes it smells but that is only because the cages needs cleaned.
 
I have my two in my room and I love them in here O0 It's great, especially because I spend the most time in here! They don't make much noise really and have never kept me awake.

i agree i love waking up to see them waiting at the cage bars looking at me as if to say "come on mother, food time!" ;D ;D
 
I am sure mine have a little clock in the cage they seem to make the same noises at the same time every morning. xx
 
I have my two babies in my room and don't notice them in the night compared to my hamster lol I actually find the guinea drinking quite reasuring at night I know I'm strange 98)
 
ive got 3 in my room atm, you'll need to clean them everyday because your sleeping in there you need it to be clean and no wee smells, duke does my head in! if i so much as move my foot in bed he's starts squeaking in the morning even if I'm not getting up! lol i like having them inside as they are more sociable.. bit annoying as i get hay all over my bedroom floor, and poop is always thrown out of the cages as they run around but if you keep it clean and get used to them moving about you should be fine :)

once mine have been fed they usually go to sleep and stay quiet while i go to sleep, I'm used to their noises now ive had them inside going up for 1 1/2 years.
 
hiya i used to have five in my room and it drove me mad to but after a while you get used to the little fuds and bangs and the water bottle to. but i gaurentee you will be woken up in the morning by them chatting to each other. but still i would change them for the world. :)
 
I had 2 babies in my room for a few months earlier last year. They can be quite noisy with the water bottle, plus banging about and squeeking during the night, but I did get used to it. The most annoying thing was bits of hay and poop on my floor all the time. I was constantly sweeping it up/hoovering everywhere. I spose a high sided cage would help this though. As for the smell it depends on your room - small rooms will smell quicker, and it does smell more in summer, however I have my window open a couple of hours a day minimum, and cleaned them out every other day.
 
am i the only one who doesnt have hay and poop on my floor?

i must have very tidy piggies ;D
 
At the moment they are in the living room but when I lived in a tiny flat it was so lovely to hear them snuffling and squeaking at night. If anyone is recovering from surgery they always sleep in my room. :)
 
my two piggies reside in my room, along with my 15 month old daughter.. I use to have hamsters and they were the most aggravating thing and I thought that the G.p's would be the same and I was totally wrong.. For about 2 hours after I turn off the light, Patches goes nuts popcorning, and running around in crazy circles... Its hilarious to watch! One word of advice, scoop out the poop and wee daily, and you wont notice odor... ;)
 
My guineas also don't throw hay and poop out of there cage lol.Another useful tip to stop your room smelling of vegies have a odour eliminating airfreshner one that just a gel one that stands up only discovered it a week ago and its amazing no more cabbage smells woohoo
 
Mine live in the livingroom but I live in a flat and keep all the doors open all the time so that the cats have free roam of the place - they're generally quite quiet during the night, although occasionally I might hear them having the odd argument but its soon quiet again.
 
I would never allow my children to have animals in their bedrooms. I just don't think it's hygenic, they are smelly and messy, and it can't be healthy.

I did once have a hamster in my bedroom when I was a teenager, but that was a huge mistake because they are nocturnal ::)

I have 3 hamsters in my room with absolutly no problem. My hamsters aren't smelly nor messy.
 
To be honest I agree with Lizzie. You may not think they are unhygenic but germs go unnoticed to the human eye. I wouldn't keep pets in a bedroom either. Guinea pigs can be noisy little things in the night, I'm usually woken by Pearl chucking the hayrack and drinking from the water bottle! :D
 
Shed will be good. I have to move mine in the shed temporarily this week as we are getting work done in the house. I've insulated it with plywood and will get some heat pads that you can put in the microwave (although I am thinking its not that cold now) to be honest my pigs prefer their own digs and tend to like the shed better.

Wilko's have some cheap sheads. :)
 
my pigs are in my bedroom and i wouldnt have it any other way :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
 
Re germs though - they'll still be the same germs in the living room as in the bedroom ;D
 
They will Lucinda that is very true, that is why I'm putting mine in the shed, after deep thought I need to get my house back to the land of the living and not use it as a barn. :D

My Shed is insulted now and the pigs will love it. Did post about it in the housing section this evening. :)
 
I've had piggies in my bedroom & loved it. If any are ill they are in my bedroom as that's the safest place for them with having 3 dogs.

No piggies in the house now but i have 3 hamsters in my comp room & a 5ft parrot cage at the side of my bed where our ratties live :smitten: :smitten:

As for germs from them, i'm more likely to make them ill with germs from me than the other way round :)
 
When I mentioned germs I meant germs from the poops not from the pigs themselves, crikey they are more clean than I am! ::) ;D

I've come in the living room a couple of times to find Caitlin running her hands through the pellet bowl and yep they poop in that so I don't think it's nice for her really. :)
