Hi all, I've been asked to take a male g-pig who needs rehoming. The problem is that I have females and obviously don't want any breeding. Can males and females be kept in the same room together but in different enclosures? Will the smells/sounds of each other cause any issues? I might be over-thinking this but I've had this problem with other species. Thank you

You can keep a single male piggy (or a male and female pair) in the same room as females - that won’t cause problems. Reason being if the male is alone (or with another sow) then he won’t have another boar to fight with over the smell of sows. What you can’t do (although it can sometimes be possible with stacked cages) is keep a bonded boar pair in the presence of sows as the two boys would fight with each other due to the smell of the sows.

However, you would need to be very careful and ensure the cage he was to live in was very secure and had a lid. A boar can be very determined to escape and get in with sows if they are nearby. If he is single though he would need to be kept alongside the sows for company

would you look to have him neutered and then (following the six week post op wait) bond him in with your sows?
