Hi everyone,

As everyone in the UK will know, the weather here has been a bit pants to say the least! Its cold and rainy and windy! My guineas Iggy and Piggy live in a hutch in the shed. The shed is draft free and I always make sure they have loads of hay to snuggle in (and nibble on) at night and sometimes I screw up sheets of newspaper in the sleeping compartment to trap warm air. But I do worry about them a bit. I did think about putting a hot water bottle in a fluffy cover in under the hay, but I think that would be TOO warm for them. Is there any food I could give them on a morning or evening that is warm? Some sort of guinea pig porridge? Or is there some sort of guinea pig sleeping bag type thing?! 98)

Thanks!
Wendy

I wouldn't recommend a hot water bottle as they may chew it and boiling water could seep out, not to mention the ingesting of rubber or whatever it's made out of! You could try a snugglesafe heat pad - I am actually considering buying one of these myself at the moment.

Have you considered getting a Cozy Cup or something similar? My two boys have one of these and they love it, its furry inside and seems to keep them quite warm! I'm thinking about investing in a snugglesafe pad as well, as soon as I find one! ;D

I have just been looking on the internet for snuggle safe heat pads and there quite expensive :o

if you just type into google snuggle safe heat pad loads of links come up for sites that sell them O0

i have always been led to believe rightly or wrongly that its not cold you have to worry about its drafts and heat that does the damage and damp!
so i would be worried about the guineas getting too warm and plenty of hay and a draft free shed should be suffice we don't tend to get the very cold winters my rule of thumb below 10c at night guineas in shed below 5c heater on timer in shed below 0c heater on constant below -5c more heat and covering up the hutches etc (not been that cold here this winter)
not sure what the core temperature of a guinea pig is? is it higher or lower than a humans (37c)?

Thanks everyone,
Iggy and Piggy are thriving and the weather seems to have picked up some what, so no worries :)

could send them to oz it is jolly warm here! 16-18 days straight of tems of 35C or over (86F) on ebay there is a piggy pouch as pictured keeps them warm in winter and cool in summer. comes with a strap so you can carry piggies in the pouch. good luck with your girls. hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-*

they are very easy to wash too. :smitten:

snugglesafe heatpads are great O0 very expensive i know, but well worth it i'd say :) it's great for when they're ill or soemthing aswell O0 it stays warm for 12 hours from having only 6 minutes in the microwave and is completely safe even if they try to chew it O0
it comes with a little case too :smitten: i don't use it often, but have one in form if it's particularly cold etc. O0 another idea as said is a piggie bed O0 i have the stripy one from Thistle cavies and it is definitely big enough for two if not three and is washable and has a fleecy lining. you could put it in the bed area with a bit of hay round if it's particularly cold, i do that sometimes too :smitten: :smitten:
here's a link for the bed thing O0 http://thistlecavies.tripod.com/shop/id3.html i have the stripy one (first one but there's a selection there) and also if you buy from Thistle Cavies, the money goes to help the rescue O0
