I am wondering how those of you with two piggys deal with getting fresh veggies for them and keeping them fresh enough to last through getting eaten. We don't eat salad in our house. The romaine head I am working off of is browning and it is only day 3. Kale and dandelion leaves are drying out and about to turn in fridge. Can I dry them and give it to them as a dry mix and try to buy less next time?

I have to buy them a few times a week, and I keep them all in the fridge. I take them out about half an hour before feeding so they are room temperature when feeding.

Yes, I do dry some things that only the pigs eat, like dandelion leaves and plantains. Dried herbs are richer, so should be fed moderately.

The rest of the veggies I keep in the fridge, buying new once generally twice or three times weekly. I keep all leafy greens in a plastic box with water - it keeps them fresher and lowers the nitrate content.

I live close to a supermarket & my Oh and I have got used to eating green beans and spring greens to keep the stock rotation going !

I find celery keeps well in a glass if water . I buy coriander and dill as " living herbs ".

thank you!, how much water?

Enough to keep the vegetables fully covered. Keep in mind that they expand quite a lot when submerged, as their turgidity increases. I also change the water after each feeding (i.e. twice daily) and rinse quickly the veggies, as the nitrates and nitrites are water-soluble and transfer from the vegetables to the water. This is especially handy for high-nitrate produce like lettuce and spinach.

We get veg twice per week, don't really give lettuce now days after reading romaine can cause bladder sludge (don't know if that's true or not), they are on the IC diet, most of the veg stays fresh, it's just the coriander I have problems with sometimes. They have their own fridge as well lol.

No lettuce? what do you give every day?

Do you put your coriander in a glass of water? If not, try it, it makes a huge difference to how long it lasts. Stand the stems in a glass of water and then put a plastic bag over the whole lot so you make a little "greenhouse" and then pop it all in the fridge.

I buy the girls leafy veg every other day, now that i have 4 girls its usually all gone just as i buy fresh so no wastage. Things like baby corn and coriander always end up getting binned as they only get a small
Amount every now and again. I can get about a week out of celery if i wrap it in tin foil x

:D I keep most of my veg and greens, wrapped in paper towels, in the fridge in "Stay fresh Longer" bags from Lakeland Ltd. Even though the bags do what they are supposed to ,I am still having to buy new stuff at least once every week. This is mainly because my girls get so little of it that the rest goes off before they can eat it. I keep parsley in a jug of water, like flowers. Same with dandelion leaves and plantain. Stuff like shredded cabbage and bags of salad leaves don't last very well. Lettuce and the like start going off as soon as the bag is opened. It is very tricky to keep it fresh for very long.

I tend to buy fresh veg 2-3 times a week, although I have noticed that we as a family have actually started eating more veg and salad purely because it goes off so quick even when kept in the fridge that we get the piggies left overs.........should that not be the other way around
Although I think in the not too near future we may be having some new arrivals fingers crossed so technically the veg should go down quicker :hmm:

My boys gobble it up so fast it never goes to waste! I usually keep romaine lettuce as their every day veg and now that summer has hit I give them a slice of cucumber each before bed. My family is a huge fan of salads and veggies dipped in hummus so things never go to waste. Also for some reason my boys won't eat high vit C veg, they used to eat peppers but haven't touched them in months for some reason :/ so cucumber and lettuce is all I keep and they go through it quickly

I cut mine up, put it in a big bowl and serve daily then put it back in the fridge to keep what evers left that I didn't feed out fresh. It seems to last 3-5 days fresh this way x
