My dog has just got kennel cough. Should I keep her away from my the room my piggie is in? Can piggies catch kennel cough and if so how do I prevent this?
Thanks xx

Hi!

I am very sorry! What a worry for you!

Kennel cough (bordetellosis) is fatal for guinea pigs.
Please keep your dog well out of the piggy room and use good hygiene to not carry it across. Ideally you wash your hands thoroughly after dealing with the dogs and always before the guinea pigs.

More information in this link here: Dogs, Kennel Cough And Guinea Pigs - An Important Consideration.

Definitely keep the dog away from the guinea pigs and practice really good hand-washing, etc., as Bordetella (bacteria causing kennel cough) is contagious and can be very serious and potentially fatal to guinea pigs. If it's possible to put the guinea pigs in a room with a shut door that will keep the dog out I would do that, as well as really good hand-washing between touching the dog and the guinea pigs.

I have kept her of the room but she got in once. I don't know if she passed it on or not. What are the signs and when will they show?
Thanks a again xx

The respiratory symptoms/chest infection should show within a very few days; see a vet ASAP as an emergency!

All the best!

I don't think Bella has got it then - as she got into the room on Sunday and seems absolutely fine. She is not coughing or sneezing and her nose isn't running and eyes aren't watering
