We noticed that Kenny has a scab between his right eye and his nose. I took him to the vet and he couldn't rightly say if it was ringworm. He brought in the black light and it did not show fungus or ringworm. He did however take some hair or a scraping of the area. I noticed today that the hair that had been kind of standing wrong on his face had fallen off (some with my help) and the area is a little bigger than it was before. Should I call the vet back and ask to treat as though he has ringworms even though the results aren't back? I don't want Seth to get them. I can post a pic if need be.

Thanks.

bumping this for you.

It would be great if you could get a clearer picture but from what I can see it is almost exactly the same as the patch of ringworm my little Bingo had. It may help you to read through the thread -

http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=83101 The first page has some good pictures and the second says the treatment I used

Hope this helps.

ringworm!!!, pop some athletes foot cream on it for twice a day for 3 weeks, dipping in imaveral and treating all cages, dishes etc with f10 or virkon

Wow, yea, I agree. It definitely looks like ringworm. I am almost hesitant about putting any meds on it because it is close to his eye. I will be very careful about it though. I think I'll call my vet and ask him to just go ahead and treat.Couldn't hurt. What about Seth? He doesn't show anything yet. Well, I need to go get some AFcreme

Vet

So I spoke to the vet this morning and he said nothing had come of the culture yet but seeing as it has grown a little, we'll treat as if it is ringworm. He wanted me to get some medicine they have there but I told him I'd rather buy it at the store if I can. He said yes, Miconazole at least once a day. It should be gone by the end of the month. Fingers crossed.

Looks possibly like ringworm, and i would go by what your vet has suggested first, as i dont like going against what a vet suggests you do. If the patch is not resolving withing 3-4 days then i would consider trying or adding a different treatment in. Make sure that your piggies cage is throughaly disinfected with a fungacidal disinfectant. I'm afraid i dont think i know any over there. (Over here Virkon, F10 and Trigene are all effective against fungus). If you can the throw away all wooden chews etc or soak them very throughaly in disinfectant. Ringworm can spread like wildfire.

the vet prescribed Conzol 1%. Once a day for 2 to 4 weeks. So cleaning the cage with bleach daily won't kill fungus? Might as well. My gliders have hookworms and I have to clean their cage everyday with it for two more days. I'm considering bottling some bleach and carrying it around as my personal fragrance. And Seth, Do I need to separate them?

GL is a US based forum so the drugs they talk about all should be available for you and your vets.
