So, I've been treating Kennys ringworm for a few days and it doesn't seem to be getting smaller. Matter of fact, it looks like it's getting bigger. Maybe I need to go get some yeast infection medicine for it.

Please be aware that with ringworm the infected area is always bigger. In order to get rid of ringworm things will inevitably look worse at first until you come to the end of the acute infection. With the right and prompt treatment, this should be about within a week, in severe cases it can take longer.

The fungus sits on the hair, and more crucially, the hair roots.

Here is a picture of my Tegan just after I noticed that something more than just a scratch was going on; it was not obvious from the beginning what it was. You can see that the hair between the bloody area and eye is starting to fall out:

Here she is just over two weeks later with the hair growing back in the order it fell out - you can clearly see the outer ring of the maximal spread of the infected area:

I just talked to the vet and she said she wanted to put him on Ketaconazole (oral) and treat him with the Conzol (topical). She said it can take quit some time to get rid of which makes me believe the other vet I consulted with last week didn't know what he was talking about. He is supposed to be an exotics expert, pssh.

Ketaconazole is the same well known active ingredient that is in canesten and daktarin cream or nizoral shampoo.

How long you are up against ringworm depends very much on the severity of the infection and how well a piggy responds to treatment, but you always need to treat longer than the symptoms are obvious to prevent a return - it is at least 2 weeks before a piggy is safe to join its friends. The same holds true if you catch ringworm yourself. Make sure that you have some cream at home, in case.

PS: Here you can see a picture of my Taffy with the affected area fully exposed (but free of fungal) during her third imaverol dip; the very first hairs are just starting to come back under her eye, but only if you look very carefully.

I hope that these pictures will help you.

So, I talked to the vet again today and we agreed to continue our current plan of care for another week at least. mallethead It's only been 4 days on this medicine.8... I need to give it time.If it isn't looking a tiny bit better, I'll get the oral meds. They got a bath today. They were good boys too. They smell nice and clean and are even a little fluffy. My daughter used the blow-dryer on the lowest setting.

So, treating Kenny's ringworm today and inspecting him, I found what appears to be another coming up right beside the outside of his eye.grrrr Same side of the face though. :o I went ahead and put medicine on it. Funny this time when I treated, he scratched a lot. Maybe it's (the medicine) irritating his skin?

Please don't be disheartened. I found with my Moose that he just started getting loads of patches everywhere and it was really stubborn. He kept scratching and I was worried that it was getting worse instead of getting better.
I was worried that the medicine was hurting him too but I think he was just being grumpy about having to be treated. He still tries to bite me but he IS getting better.

I know it feels as if he may never get better but he will x>>

Noticed

I was petting Kenny this morning and looking him over and noticed that the ringworm looks like it is further out just a bit than it looks.8... There is still hair on some of it.grrrr I just wonder if in treating the other area in the beginning the medicine irritated his skin and he scratched some scab off making it look bigger?{:| I'm leaning towards that now.:(|) I'm being very diligent on this though. pow-pow The one I noticed the other day beside his eye is still tiny. I don't think he likes me much anymore because I put the meds on him. :0

I've been watching Kennys ringworm and treating it but I can't really see it anymore. Sage to stop treating? I had noticed two areas behind his ears. One right behind each ear that has very little hair on it. I had treated it a few times but it got pretty pink and he squeals when I put the medicine. Do they sometimes have areas like that with little to no hair? It is directly in back of his ear..each one. I'm thinking if it is on both sides, it is normal?
