OMG I have now worked myself in to a stew as I have been reading things on the internet and have got myself worked up. As some of you know, Connie isn't 100% well at the minute. She has dis coloured urine and sometimes squeeks a little when she wee's. She is suppose to be going on Septrin next week when the vet gets hold of it but has been on Baytril for 3 weeks now which has caused a little weight loss (well, I hope it is that). She has had an x ray and she doesn't have bladder stones. I am now worried though that she may have kidney failure or something :0 Can anyone please advise as I am now even more worried :( I should really stop reading things on the internet x

Hi Claire,

Run it past your vet thats the best thing to do. Yep do stop reading online, it does no good as info can not be guaranteed and you will just make yourself ill with worry.

I'm not sure what to suggest as I've never faced this, hope Connie will be ok!

Please try not to worry. So many problems with guinea pigs can have similar symptoms. Although you can get a lot of useful information off the internet, you can also worry yourself to death.

Speak to the vet about it, but i'm sure its just a stubborn UTI. What in particular has made you think that kidney failure could be the problem?

It's just the dis coloured urine that is worrying me as nobody know's why it's this colour. Then there are the crystals in her urine, the trace of protein and the weight loss (which he thinks is the baytril). I keep checking her underneath and she isn't wet or anything. I'm just worrying myself to death :(

As I understand it, with kidney failure there would be a more significant amount of protein in the urine and the weightloss would be more pronounced. Baytril does affect their appetite and i'm sure once she's stopped having it her weight will go back up. She hasn't lost much weight has she? I had a piggy who had kidney failure and his weight dropped from about 1.2 kilos to 700g.

Please try not to worry and don't go reading up on any more info until you have spoken to the vet. x

I don't think that she's lost much weight. When your piggy had kidney failure, did her have crystals in his urine or dis coloured urine or any other symptoms? Connie hasn't lost her appetite :( Also, what was the outcome of your piggy?

No he didn't really have any symptoms like that at all. There was a raised level of protein in his urine and he lost weight. Initially he lost quite a bit of weight and then hovered between 930g - 980g. It was only in the last couple of months that his weight dropped lower. He sadly went to Rainbow Bridge a few weeks ago aged just over 5. Apart from being rather thin, he was happy and lively. In fact very lively. He lived with two youngsters and kept up with them the whole time. He was standing at the bars shouting for food the night before I found him gone in the morning. He started the weight loss about 18 months before.

Thank you Debbie. I really hope that she doesn't have this. The vet said that most of the time, serious illnesses happen to older pigs. I just really want him to hurry up and get hold of the Septin for her. I don't no what I'm going to do if he can't get hold of any :(

If he says he can't get hold of any septrin, could you ask him for a prescription to get it yourself at the chemist. I'm sure you can do this.

I will ask him. Do you think he will be able to get hold of it though? He said on Friday that he needs to order it in but then rang me to say that he is having problems getting it :(
