I have a two and a half year old Sheltie boar how has a puzzling urinary problem. He has taken in fluids over the past few days but urinary output has ceased. He is obviously unwell and has a slight rythmic tremor but no obvious swelling of the bladder. No evidence of excessive fluid in the abdomen. Have tried to locate Rodentologist/Vet Helen priest who used to consult in Dudley but without success. Any suggestions as to where she may be located would be helpful. Thanks.

If he has stopped urinating, he needs to see a vet ASAP.

I know that we try and see the most experienced cavy vet we can, but in this scenario, I'd say that any vet will do.

Please make an emergency appointment with a vet ASAP.

Where are you located? Someone may be able to suggest a vet for you to see, but I really wouldn't delay treatment whilst waiting for a response.

Keep us updated on his progress!

Good luck

I agree with Amanda, please have your piggy seen asap. If you give your location we will try to recommend a cavy savvy vet for you but in the meantime please have your piggy seen.

Rosie at wombrook vetinary centre is an excellent cavy savy vet, she works in wombourne or Gornal.

Out of hours care is st georges in wolverhampton, who we have no experience of.

Update on my my Sheltie boar. Thanks for the advice. It would seem that there is no evidence of either bladder or kidney stones. Urine output has returned to normal and he's certainly a happier little chap. However, the other half of his problem is a sustained reluctance to show interest in vegetables. Diet is currently limited to Readygrass and regular feeds of a semi-liquid mixture consisting of Excel pellets, Galens Garden Nutripowder and banana all crushed up in warm water. To this is also added specified doses of effervescent Vit C and Probiotic. While he enjoys this and it's clearly sustaining life, any ideas to introduce vegetables back into a normal healthy diet would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again

Will he eat any other hays beside redigrass? Have you tried the posh stuff (just to get him back into it) the really green timothy hay, excell herbage treats etc etc?

I'm not sure exactly what mush you are currently feeding but my idea would be to make the mush your feeding from his pellets (cover with boiling water then mash with the back of a fork and mix in whatever probiotic etc your already using. This can then hopefully progress to softened pellets in a bowl in the cage that he tucks into, then back to hard pellets. :)
