Hello,

I am new to the forum, although not new to the wonderful world of piggies :-)

One of my girls was diagnosed with a large kidney stone yesterday. The vet has said he won't operate as it is so large, which I can understand. But, I was wondering is there anything we can do to reduce the size of the stone? I know in humans when you have kidney stones they give you something to dissolve the stone slightly, so it can pass through the kidney less painfully.

Is there no piggy equivalent? I am guessing not or I hope my vet would have said. We have been with them for years and have always found them excellent with piggy knowledge.

Any advice greatfully received

:(:(

I am very sorry, but my experience is only with more frequent bladder stones; and I haven't found much on kidney stones while searching for information on them.

Here are links to two of the best medical websites for guinea pigs:

Perhaps you can contact a rodentologist near you or somebody at CCT (Cambridge Cavy Trust) as I think you need qualified help for your problem. It may take you some time to contact the cavy trust, because they are usually very busy. http://www.jackiesguineapiggies.com/cct.html

Best of luck!

Welcome to the forum Berry Pigs and I am sorry to hear about your piggy. Like Vickyt I only have experience of bladder stones, but just wanted to wish your piggy well. Why does the vet think it is not possible to remove the stone, with it being large will it do too much damage to the kidney if he/she tries to remove it? I wonder whether pigs can manage with only one kidney? Has your vet given you any pain relief for your pig, if it's a large stone I would image it is extremely painful. Sorry for all the questions.

I also tend to agree with Vickyt, it would be a good idea to contact the CCT and ask for some advice. Good luck and sending gentle hugs to your little one.
