Hi new here and hoping for some information/ help on my baby girl who is nearly 5 has had a x-ray today and have confirmed she has a kidney stone a biggish one ive been told. 2 options given to me are to let her go or surgery but they aren't guaranteed to make it through the anesthetic so either way I could lose her. But its a risk I have to take because shes my girl 😭 so my question really is has anyone had this happen to their piggies and they make it through surgery or anyone with similar stories and it end in happy tears and not sad ones . She's absolutely fine in her self shes lost abit of weight but I think thats due to us having to cut her food because she was a very chunky girl . She's running around eating and still squeaking the house down. Am I being horrible putting her through surgery I just dont know

Welcome to the forum and I’m so sorry to hear this

Can I ask, you refer to kidney stones but do you mean in the kidney or rather stones in the bladder?
Stones in the bladder can often be removed (with a knowledgeable vet) and we have many piggies who have had to have that surgery. Stones still in the kidneys are usually inoperable.

Is your vet knowledgeable in guinea pigs surgery?

You certainly aren’t being horrible by doing surgery. I feel if there is a chance it can save them then it’s worth trying.

Losing weight - if she was being over fed on veg and pellets then cutting that down to the recommended amount (one cup of veg per day and one tablespoon of pellets per day) can result in weight loss so may not be of concern as such.
However, losing weight through a reduction in hay intake (which will occur if a piggy is unwell) is a very different thing and definitely is of concern.

My rabbit had a very large kidney stone, her kidney had basically calcified. Her whole kidney was removed successfully. It was a big operation though. Of course she's a bunny not a piggy, but we had a happy ending!
