I was cleaning the pigs out this morning and had put Kwazii and Rosie in the pet carrier while their cage was being cleaned. I was just lifting Rosie out to put her back first and Kwazii attacked and bit me. Drew blood too, not too bad, but all the same it was a shock. I've always been wary of him because he tends to be rough and he nudges your hand quite hard when he doesn't want to be stroked. He hasn't been handled as often as the other pigs mainly because he doesn't like being picked up and handled.

I think he may have been trying to protect Rosie because it was her I was picking up, but all the same I am more wary of him now.

Owee, I always find those bites hurt a lot worse the NEXT day. >< How long have you had them? If you've had him a long time and he's never bitten, be on the lookout for any other changes in his behaviour. One of mine started biting -- HARD -- pretty suddenly. I found out later he had an inner ear infection, and looking back I think his discomfort made him tetchy. :( Pigs aren't known for biting, and sometimes if they're in pain or not feeling well they can get pretty ornery about being picked up. Maybe he thought you were coming for him.

If you think he's just being protective of his wife, though, maybe make a point of holding her often while he's in the cage watching, so he can see that you don't hurt her at all.

ouch! perhaps you wasnt watching his body language? Bertie will snuggle and snuggle and then somedays he pushes my hand away as much as if to say "not today not in the mood!"

He does usually nudge your hand away when he's had enough stroking and he is left alone but I was nowhere near him, I was picking Rosie up and he charged at my hand.

We've had them since they were 4 months old. We had the boys in February and the girls in April.
