Hi, can anyone reccomend a good guinea pig vet in Doncaster?
I've got a piggy with a 12 day old baby and I've noticed she's started sneezing a fair bit so want to get her checked out.
Does anyone know if lactating pigs can have antibiotics (if she needs them)? obviously I will ask the vet but just thought I'd ask for advice here first. She seems quite happy and is defenitily eating lots but want to get her checked just to be on the safe side.
Thanks x

Please can anyone help?
The vets near me has several surgeries (not sure if I'm allowed to name them) and when I contacted them about my rapidly expanding piggies, I wanted to get them checked as I wasn't sure if they were pregnant or had bloat, I was told they were too young to be pregnant as they couldn't get pregnant under 8 weeks and when I did take them to the vets they told me that my guineas were pregnant but couldn't tell me what sex they were! I'm no vet or doctor etc but I know that if they're pregnant they're female!
As I'm sure you can understand I'm not going back to that vet again so need a new one, any recommendations would be great, thanks.

Hi Judith

If the vet (I'm working on finding one) wants to prescribe antibiotics please ask for Septrin(paediatric), as baytril can cause problems for the babies as it interferes with their growth.

I'm from Doncaster.

The vet I used to use in Doncaster was Bernard and works for vet4pets wheatley hall rd. He's only there part time, he possibly works for the other branches on other days. You must ask for Bernard though, he was the only vet i found to be totally fine about subscribing Septrin and was happy to do a X-ray with out GA.

In the last few years I have been going to a vets in Hoyland Barnsley as I take my foster Piggies from BARC and see either Carmen or Sharon.

Hope this helps

thank you both for your replies. I was trying to research antibiotics last noght as I don't want anything that will harm mum or baby and couldn't get much information except that Baytril shouldn't be used in lactating or pregnant guinea pigs so thank you for the Septrin advice.

As for the vets 4 pets suggestion I will try asking for Bernard but to be honest I'm after a different vet as it was Vets4pets that told me that they couldn't be pregnant as they were too young and then when I took them they couldn't tell the sex so I'm not really very confident using them.

I had a bit of conflicting advice for other vet4pet staff that's why in the end I wouldn't see anyone but Bernard.

The other one you could try is the vet that the Cavy Corner Sanctuary use, Arundal vet in toll bar. Ask for Steven, I haven't personally used him.

The vets I use in Hoyland is called Abbey, sorry forgot to name it on my last post.

thanks you.
Funny you should mention Cavy corner as I have just hunted down their facebook page and asked on there about vets (thought as its local it would be a good place to ask)
I will see if I can get hold of Bernard, if not will try Toll Bar.
Thank you very much.
I will let you know how I get one.

evening :)
Sorry for the delayed update, cavy slavery has made me miles behind all day ;)
I spoke to the lovely people at cavy corner and they took me through a few checks to do on Biscuit, listening to her breathing etc, then we disscussed food, bedding etc and it was decided that as she has no other symptoms and her breathing sounds fine and she is eating (non stop :)) ) and alert that the sneezing has probably been down to the hay she's had the last few days. The hay is dust extracted but it was the bottom of the bag and probably a bit too dusty for her nose.
That hay has now been binned and the new bag has been opened, and gratefully recieved :(|)
I have been out most of this afternoon but have been listening carefully for sneezes since I've been in and I haven't noticed any yet so fingers crossed she'll be ok.
The Cavy Corner people also said that i could take the baby piggies in to them and they will sex them for me too which is a great help. we had a look this morning and think I've got 3 boys and a girl.
Thank you again for all your help and I promise to try and stop worrying so much about every little thing with my piggies from now on :red

PHEW that is a huge relief love!
awwwwwwwwwwww i'm so pleased to hear little Biscuit is doing so well x)
Bless her sounds like she was a very young mummy!
Good luck with the sexing of the mini's...... do you think you'll be able to keep any or all of them?
Well done for being so observant ! x)

hi
I'm still keeping a close eye on biscuit but haven't noticed any sneezes for a while so hopefully it was just a hay/dust thing :)
Both my piggies are very young mummys, I made the mistake of getting them from a pet shop! I didn't know that guinea pig rescues existed. I got the girl on 02/06/12 and was told they were 8 weeks old and going by those dates and when the babies arrived they must've got pregnant around 4 weeks old. Poor girls, such a lot to go through at such a young age . They are doing a lovely job and being really good mummys.
It has been a great experience having the mini's, not one i planned on or that I'm going to do again though. I'm hoping to keep a girl if we have one (I think there's one girl and 3 boys but will be getting them checked to be on the safe side) and I dont want to get rid of the boys but we haven't got room to have another cage for pigs in the house and I dont want them living outside all the time :0
I will make sure they go to good homes though and if I cant find nice forever homes for them I will contact our local rescue to see if they know anyone that could spoil them as much as I do :))
trying to work out how to put some pictures up but I'm not great on computers so it may take a while rolleyes

I'm keeping them until they do get lovely homes however long it takes, I may not have room for them permanantly but I've got a spare cage and will make room for it until the right home comes along.
Thanks for the pigture link, I will have a look in a min and see if I can get some up :)

I've looked at that photo link it it looks fairly straightforward but my internet has ground to a halt, on my phone internet now, so I'll have do try this evening.
As for the piggies bein loved, they get more attention than the dogs, the kids and the husband :))
Thank you so much for all your help x>>
